Micah Owings' pitching is finally catching up to his bat. The Cincinnati right-hander homered and pitched into the seventh inning to help the Reds beat the St. Louis Cardinals 5-2 on Saturday. Owings (6-8) allowed six hits and two runs in 6 2-3 innings with two walks and six strikeouts for his third win in last four starts.

The Reds are suffering through a rash of torn labrums. Danny Richar became the second Cincinnati infielder in 11 days to go on the disabled list with that specific injury, joining Wilkin Castillo.

Both injured their left shoulders. Both did it sliding headfirst into the plate. Manager Dusty Baker has the cure.

"We have been talking about it, but you do it so long that it becomes a natural thing," he said before Friday's game. "You can tell 'em and tell 'em and tell 'em, but..."

Baker recalled being warned as a young player by long-time first baseman Donn Clendenon about the dangers.
