Mike Leake's first taste of professional baseball came in the prospect-laden Arizona Fall League, but the right-hander passed the test.

Leake, the eighth overall pick in this year's draft, signed at the Aug. 15 deadline. Because it was so late in the minor league season and Leake had pitched 140-plus innings for Arizona State, the Reds decided to delay his debut until the fall.

He went 1-2 with a 1.37 ERA in the AFL. Leake struck out 15 and walked only three in 19 2/3 innings. His last 9 2/3 inning were scoreless.

Leake was 16-1 with a 1.71 for Arizona State last season.

David Bell, Leake's manager in the AFL and the Reds' Class AA Carolina manager, was impressed.

"It's pretty amazing how he handled himself," Bell said.

Catcher Ramon Hernandez agreed Monday to a $3 million, one-year contract with the Reds after Cincinnati declined his $8 million option. The deal includes a $3.25 million option for 2011 that would become guaranteed if Hernandez plays in 120 games next season. If he plays in fewer, the Reds do not have the ability to exercise the option.

A minor league pitcher in the Cincinnati Reds' organization has been suspended for 50 games for using and possessing a performance-enhancing substance. Jose Marmolejo played for the Reds' team in the Dominican Summer League. He was penalized Friday. The Reds suspended Marmolejo for 10 games late last season while his case was being reviewed.
