Reds minor leaguer suspended for banned substance (AP)

A minor league pitcher in the Cincinnati Reds' organization has been suspended for 50 games for using and possessing a performance-enhancing substance. Jose Marmolejo played for the Reds' team in the Dominican Summer League. He was penalized Friday. The Reds suspended Marmolejo for 10 games late last season while his case was being reviewed.

The first big decision of the Reds' offseason will be which players they will offer arbitration.

The club has five players eligible: outfielders Jonny Gomes and Laynce Nix, catcher Corky Miller and right-handers Nick Masset and Jared Burton.

The Reds certainly will offer contracts to Masset and Burton. Masset went 5-1 with a 2.37 ERA and held opponents to a .203 average. Burton struggled early but ended up 1-0 with a 4.40 ERA after a stint on disabled list dealing with asthma.

Gomes had a solid year. He hit .267 with 20 home runs and 51 RBIs in 281 at-bats. He'd seem like a lock to be offered a contract, but the Reds are probably going to cut their payroll, which was $73.9 million at the beginning of the 2009 season.

That likely will mean if Nix and Miller...

Former Arizona Diamondbacks pitching coach Bryan Price has been hired for the same position with the Cincinnati Reds. He replaces Dick Pole, who was fired on Oct. 2 as the only change on manager Dusty Baker's staff. Price has spent the last 10 years as a pitching coach in the majors. He was with Arizona from 2006 until May 8, when he resigned after manager Bob Melvin was fired.
