Putz, Pavano file for free agency (AP)

Mets reliever J.J. Putz and Twins pitcher Carl Pavano filed for free agency Saturday. Putz became a free agent one day after New York declined his $9.1 million option and chose to pay a $1 million buyout. A total of 120 players have filed for free agency since the World Series, and about 60 more are potentially eligible to file by the Nov.

The Chicago White Sox have declined the mutual option on veteran right fielder and former World Series MVP Jermaine Dye, clearing the way for him to become a free agent. Dye will get a buyout of $950,000 instead of $12 million he could have gotten in salary next season. Dye, the World Series MVP in 2005 for the White Sox, signed a two-year, $22 million extension late in the 2007 season.

The goal was met for Ozzie Guillen—be present at the World Series. It was supposed to be as manager of the White Sox, however, rather than as a Fox TV analyst.

Now that his time with the network is up and the Series is over, Guillen's focus returned to the task at hand for 2010, specifically a second World Series title for the South Side in the last five years.

"It's very sad," Guillen said of his moonlighting gig. "In the meanwhile, it gives you the energy to get back there. The emotion you have just being there makes you jealous. It makes you want to be one of the people on the stage, not the guy behind the scenes."

Guillen and the Sox are turning their attention to bouncing back from a disappointing 2010.

Mark Kotsay agreed Thursday to a $1.5 million contract to remain with the Chicago White Sox. The 33-year-old infielder and outfielder, who had been eligible for free agency, hit .278 with four homers and 23 RBIs in 67 games combined with Boston and the White Sox last season. Chicago acquired him from the Red Sox on July 28 for outfielder Brian Anderson.
