      <description> &lt;p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Right-hander Edgar Gonzalez has done some of his best work on short notice, especially when called on to make an emergency start in place of left-hander Randy Johnson.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Pitching on three hours notice Sunday, Gonzalez gave up only two runs in five innings while striking out three and was in line for his second victory of the season before the bullpen failed to hold a 4-2 lead in a 6-4 loss to the Cubs at cold, damp Wrigley Field.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Gonzalez threw first-pitch strikes to the first 14 batters he faced, and to 17 of his 21, before leaving for a pinch hitter in the top of the sixth after throwing 87 pitches. Davis said he got the news from surgeon Dr. Bob Evani, who removed the pitcher's cancerous thyroid gland on April 10. "The cancer did not spread and it will not spread from here on out," Davis said Thursday.</description>
