Even as they pursue free-agent starting pitchers CC Sabathia, Derek Lowe and A.J. Burnett, the New York Yankees could also have an eye on San Diego Padres right-hander Jake Peavy according to MLB.com.

FoxSports.com reports the Yanks and Padres have had "numerous discussions" about Peavy, according to a Major League source. The Braves recently announced they were pulling out of Peavy trade discussions. Padres GM Kevin Towers said Thursday that negotiations with the Cubs were also over.

With Peavy having a full no-trade clause and expressing a strong preference to stay in the National League according to agent Barry Axelrod, a trade to an American League club could get complicated.

FoxSports.com also lists the Angels as a possible AL destination for Peavy.

According to columnist Tim Sullivan of The San Diego Union-Tribune, Padres general manager Kevin Towers sees the potential for talks with the Yankees, adding that New York has the young arms San Diego covets in Phil Hughes and Ian Kennedy.

Is it just me, or does this article not go along with the title. It doesn't say anywhere in here that there have been actual talks regarding Hughes and Kennedy, just that Towers say that he sees potential for talks with the Yankees...once again, great rumor by Y! Sports...

Trade Cano, get rid of that idiot. Plus trade Kennedy and Melky. I rather keep Hughes.

I don't know how many of you agree with me, I am a hugh Yankees fan, and I F**King hate Cano. He will never be a super star. I don't care if he bats .350 next year. He's too damn cocky. Trade him to padres and sign Orlando Hudson.

Money talks BS walks. Would be a great deal for both teams. Kennedy is a definite maybe and Hughs could start immediately but lacks control and can't go deep into games.

Awesome, no relation between the title and the article.
They shouldnt do this. Just because they need pitching doesnt mean they need to do it all at once and trade their youngsters away. DONT DO IT!!!

Yes indeed this article is filled with disinformation. The title is "Yanks-Padres talking trade for Peavy", but we find out that the Padres GM Towers sees a potential for talks with the NYY. Therefore, I conclude that there have NOT been any "talks" between the two teams, but that SDP would like to initiate negotiations between the two teams about a trade for Peavy with SDP's eyes on Hughes and Kennedy. There is a known "fly in the ointment"--Peavy's no-trade clause, and his stated preference for staying in the NL. So much BS.

Cano will be a star, I would not include him unless your getting Greene in the deal, and your not giving up both Hughes and Kennedy. Hughes and Kennedy for peavy is a nice deal for the padres, good for the yanks if you can sign him to an extension. If they do get Peavey, I would pull the contract offer for CC and just go after Burnett,

The greedy spankees are at it again.
The rest of baseball should shut down, and send all their stars to the spankees.
Then we can watch them come in 3rd place again, and laugh at them.

To me after Roy Halladay, Peavey (along with maybe Oswalt) is the best pitcher in baseball right now. Hughes may be up there someday, but that is a big may, If he can calm down and learn to pitch in the majors Kennedy at best will be a #2, and again thats a big if.

Don't ever count the Yankees out. This would be the most fantastic trade made. 2009 Rotation: Sabathia, Wang, Peavy, & either Burnett or Lowe. That wouldn't bode well for the Rays or BoSox. Or the rest of the A.L. for that matter. Now get Texeria and we are finished shopping. Happy days are here again !!!!!!!!!!!

What a difference a year makes. Hughes and Kennedy stock have crashed like AIG. How did Cashman get an extension? He makes terrible trades and hasn't gotten a pitcher right in 8 years. The last time they had a strong rotation 4 out of 5 them were using steroids in 2000.

greedy please, this isn't about the yanks money, its about the talent they have in their farm system. maybe if the Padres spent money they could avoid this.

I am sick of the haters with ignorant comments on the greedy Yankees trying to buy penants. There is no salary cap and all teams are supposed to buy the best players. If your team doesn't care enough to try and win don't whine and get of the yankee sites. If the Yanks can get a quality starter it is a great deal. These players aren't forced to play in NY. They come for the money or to play in the most successful franchise ever.

If he's reluctant to come to the American League, then I see no reason why the Yankees couldn't just bump up his contract a little. The Yankees have plenty of money to spend, and it's CLEARLY the players who lead the greed train in MLB. Nothing like a few extra million dollars to make a player say "I've always wanted to play [insert team with the highest contract offer]; they made me feel like they really appreciated me."

    Bryan,
Cano will NOT be a star. Last year he bats .340? and this year? .250? A good player like Jeter, Pujols, Arod, etc... will NEVER have this kind of odd avg compare the 2 years. Unless they are injury or something. And I DO NOT want Greene. Greene is a SS and will always be an avg player. I rather sign Orlando Hudson instead.
And about Halladay, I can bet you $1,000,000 Santana is better than any pitchers out there. He had proved it in AL or NL, and much much healthly than Halladay or Peavy. Although I do like Peavy to land in yankees.

The point that should be made here is that it isnt the yankees fault they have an owner that is weilling to spoend money they are operating in the parameters that have been set up by the rules in the game. for once i would like to see the teams like the marlins padres reds orioles etc who never spend money on thier teams. that is the reason for the hating, fans would love to see their teams as active as the yankees are when they see talent they go after it just like the red sox the mets and only a handfull of other teams

Cashman must feel like a jerk right now. In the last hours for Johan last year the Twins came down and took Hughes off the board and went with a Kennedy, Melky and another minor leaguer(i think jose tabata, who was eventually traded anyway). So I can see Cashman trying to get the same sort of package, probably deeper younger minor league talent with Kennedy and Melky in an effort to keep Hughes. It would be great for the Yanks if they could do this trade, but if they could trade without losing Hughes then it would be a bonus.
