Yankees re-signing Eric Chavez?Well, it looks like the New York Yankees won't have to turn over $2 million to folks in Japan. The New York Daily News reports that the money the team bid for the right to negotiate with 29-year-old shortstop Hiroyuki Nakajima will be returned to the team if it doesn't make a deal by the end of business on Friday. It is looking unlikely that any deal between the two sides will happen at this point, the paper notes.

The Daily News reports that the Yanks and Nakajima never seemed to match up since the Yankees already have Derek Jeter and Eduardo Nunez filling the spot.

A player the team is interested in signing, though, is infielder Eric Chavez, the paper notes. The 34-year-old six-time Gold Glove winner spent last season with the Yanks, batting .263 in 160 at-bats, after playing 13 seasons for the Oakland Athletics.

Nakajima, meanwhile, may soon be able to sign with any team he wishes.
