MLB - Sports Rumors

“MattThe New York Yankees found enough cash last off-season to get Mark Teixeira(notes), CC Sabathia(notes), and A.J. Burnett(notes) off the free-agent marketplace, putting them in a pretty good position to be the powerhouse they were in 2009 on the way to a championship. But the team is supposedly not taking the same course this winter.

There are really only three highly valuable free agents this off-season -- Jason Bay(notes), Matt Holliday(notes), and John Lackey(notes) - and the Yankees aren't expected to go after any of them, according to the New York Post.

It looks like the Yankees are closing up the wallet a little and letting a whole lot of money flow in right now instead of out.

The team may be at the point of no return on expenditures, anyway. The Yanks will spend $100 million next season Alex Rodriguez(notes), Sabathia, Teixeira and Derek Jeter(notes) alone and have another $70 million already committed to 13 other players from Kei Igawa(notes) to Juan Miranda(notes).

Holliday's agent, Scott Boras, apparently wants him to be paid around the same as Teixeira (eight years, $181 million), Lackey is expected to get around $100 million for five years, and Bay could get around $90 million for five years.

Can't believe the Yankees are tightening their purse strings. If they let both Damon and Matsui go, they'll have some leftover change.

Well, I think this "article" conveniently ignores the fact that Damon and Matsui are both fairly big-name free agents whom the Yankees WILL be pursuing. They just happen to be guys from their own organization.

if the yanks are only up to 170 million, they have about 35-45 million to splurge in FA. That's enough to sign Bay and Lackey......They need a pitcher who is consistent as evidenced by their 3 man rotation in the playoffs. Though the Yankees aren't very smart with their money, resigning Damon and/or Matsui would be silly if they could get younger with Bay or Holliday and the expense is only a little different(for the Yankees that is) those names seem a better option than the older Damon and injury prone Matsui.

Bankees, who bought a world series (I guess congrat for that, huh), are not spending? No, that is like the US not being in debt: it ain't happen!
They will buy Holliday (9 years, 235 billlion), Halliday (trade all of their "TALENT", sign him to a 123 year, 44444 trillion dollar deal), blahhhhh
Does it matter? At least this is the best part of a lousy baseball season.

Holliday is NOT Teixeira and there's no way he can draw that sort of money. Take him out of the the NL and the value has to drop after the "Oakland experiment"

you know its sad when a team like the pirates has to disband and let go of their best players every year and the yankees are talking about not going after free agents this year after spending 400 million last off season....baseball is capitalist and the yankees are the prime example of whats wrong wit baseball and why we need a salary cap...enjoy your paid for championship

Hey all, I am a Red Sox fan, just wanted to put that out there.
Tired already of all the whining about the Yankees buying a Championship. Let it go. Congrats to the Yankees and their fans. You deserve all the cheers as the best team won. Who cares how, everybody has the ability to do what they did.
Stop complaining and start building your teams.
Go Red Sox!!!!! Do not sign Haliday, but do sign Doc Holiday!!

    Congratulations! Again, davfied
Hope you enjoy this off-season. It may be your last. Your World Series heros, Damon and Matsui are on there way out. Purse strings are being tightened. Joba isn't closer material, as was evident in his short stints as set up man. Rivera doesn't have much more left. Rodriquez is now crowding the plate, because he can't get around on the ball like he used too. That's why pitchers are crowding him. Jeter is looking good, but can he carry the team alone? This will be Posada's last hurrah. Straight Shooter.

MarcS........very well said. I'm so sick of the bull [profane] [profane]s talking about the paid for championship. Don't fault the Yankees for running a great business. Let's not pretend like the billion dollar baseball organizations aren't companies. The Yankees pay the players their worth for the money they pull in where as some other teams choose to put that money in their wallets. Don't get me wrong, obviously the Yanks are in a huge money market but I live in Pittsburgh where the Pirates make money and continue to not invest in players. The A's, Twins, Cards and Rockies all seem to manage to run good organizations making smart decisions. I don't hear people complain about the Red Sox payroll and it's through the roof as well. In summary........yinz haters can choke on deez nuts

Straight Shooter.............i understand Rivera is getting older but what part of this season or postseason did you notice Rivera not having much left??? ARod hit 30hr's with 100rbi's while missing the 1st month of the season and he was fantastic in the postseason. The guy is in the prime of his career. Joba isn't the closer but he is very much closer material. Let's keep in mind that he's i think 21 or 22 years old still with electric stuff. Your post was dumb.

Morning Dav. The Yanks are going to get their well deserved parade today. At 6:00 a.m. there were crowds of people filing into lower Manhattan. The local sports radio show are being broadcast live from the parade route.
They re expecting millions. I m at work and will have to settle for it on T.V. But the whole city is buzzing. So far I have run into lots of Met fans for the last few days and they are all being very nice. There were alot of them who rooted for the Yanks. Its good to see that. As far as Holliday goes, he should go back to Colorado where the air is thin and hes more of a power hitter. Bay ? He s probably staying in Boston and that fine. Hes a good player, but I can t envision him wanting to come here. Lackey , who knows ! Today I m just going to enjoy the parade .

If Andy doesn't come back...who will take his place? You got to have 3 great starters heading into the post season! If Andy wants another year...great! As for the OF situation, let Damon go! Bring on Crawford at all cost and keep Matsui. That's it...this is all we need to repeat.
