Yankees have been hit by flu bug

The New York Yankees have been hit with a flu bug that's circulating through the team and landed Derek Jeter(notes) on the bench for a second straight day and now has hit Johnny Damon(notes), according to the New York Daily News.

Ramiro Pena(notes) replaced Jeter again Saturday night when the Bombers beat the Mets, 5-0, at Citi Field. Melky Cabrera(notes) was in left field for Damon. The batting order had Brett Gardner(notes) and Nick Swisher(notes) in the first two slots.

"Jeet's still sick," Joe Girardi said beforehand. "I know he really wants to play (Saturday night) and he's not happy about being out of the lineup. It was recommended, when I talked to the (doctor), that we give him another day. He was really, really sick (Friday) night."

More casualties could be coming. Mark Teixeira(notes) and Phil Hughes(notes) both confessed to feeling less than 100%.

Girardi estimated that nine players, coaches and support staff have been hit so far.

So far it looks like the subs are performing better than the regulars. This may actually be good news for the Yanks.

we have so much talent we should not panic and win this year and few more year more , at the end of this year we till can update the player i think we will have a few free player and so we should look for better improved line up.

it is nice to see that the newer yanks are not sitting on that first pitch mentality ..so tired of strike one as we watch it dead center plate ..

It helps when the starters throw 3 and 1 hitters.

    Meth,
I know I am right but you don't know anything. ARod is not a leader. He is a producer. Period. He should let his performance do ALL his talking. The Mets are really beat up right now and it will be a miracle if the win a 3rd of their games for quite some time. That is what the Yankees went through last season. As far as your thoughts about Jeter, you couldn't be any more wrong. You are very entertaining this AM. The ring is what they play this game for. FUKK the Mets.

Actually, I would rather the Yanks and Sox play the Cubs and Dodgers then the Mets. Far more entertaining. 6 games with the Mets every year is 3 games to much, maybe every 3 years, not every year. Boring.

Yankees need to keep rolling, beating a met team that doesnt have a real mlb quality number two starter should be a given.

yank #5 - bottom line is this. at the end of the day (as you like to say) our depleted team is one and a half out while your healthy team is 4 out, how pathetic is that. you sound like a whiny little boy with not much ground to stand on. your quarter of a billion dollar team isn't exactly running away with anything. btw- how many have you won from the sox this year? you're so sad.......
morning dav- all I can say is, thank goodness for that one hit, lol. I am usually so much more into the games with you, but our team is so beat up, I am honestly not upset, like I normally would be. it's not like you guys are killing a healthy team, we are a mess. It softens the weekend for me. If we were healthy, I might not be reading these posts this weekend, lol...

Very good comment about jumping on the first pitch.......If ya noticed in the 6th..........4 pitches.4 runs!!!!They are a good team at waiting out a pitcher and if the starters all get on the same page, they will be a scary team in the dog days!!!!

    lrg,
I got the meaning. I don't twist things like some others we know. If you guys hold on it will be amazing. Burnett had a nasty curve last night.
    Hey Scott,
My GG Nephew started football practice this week. He is going out for QB. He has an excellent arm. I played some catch with him and gave him some pointers on the game. He is 5'8", 130. At 13 he has a way to go. His Grandfather was 6'4". His Sister (16) & Mother are both 5'8". This will be great to watch him blossom.

Irg - sorry that not every team has the money that the yankees do??? and i'm pretty sure in the last 3 subway series games the yankees had 29 runs and the mets had 1. thats pitiful. you don't deserve to talk down on the yankees.

ah, a good and upcoming bench? What have the yanks accomplished with a-slob? Matswere, is just that. And for Jeter? Is his time done? I don't think so, but. How about having somebody actually earn their pay? What a concept. Dump these high=priced under acheivers, and yes, their are lots of them everywhere, and you will see the price of tickets drop. The american pastime? Not anymore. It's now greed, greed and more greed.

davfied, why are you adressing me?? What did I say to make you miss mass to stay on the computer all day.
Can you tell me how many rings Jeter has as captain? You want to take credit away from O'Niell, Tino, Williams and all those vets and roid players on the Yank teams of the late 20th century go ahead. How many rings has Jeter won without them? Are you going to dare say he hasn't had a supporting cast around him in the 21st century? Once again I only speak facts. A lot of pretty boys don't LEAD their teams to WS rings. Lee Mazilli won but not as a leader. See Met fans can understand. I'm just wondering ,what is Jeter getting credit for leading?

Jeter did a pretty good job leading the team to a WS in 2000 when he was the WS MVP and dominated the Mets.
