Now that the Texas Rangers have traded away Edinson Volquez, thought to be a viable option as the fifth starter, Texas may be more inclined to get an experienced arm to bring in for spring training.

One possibility is right-hander Bartolo Colon. He's 38 years old, pitched in just 99 1/3 innings last year. Colon won the Cy Young in 2005, going 21-8 with 3.48 ERA in 222 2/3 innings. But a partially torn rotator cuff after that season has left him struggling to regain his form.

His 2007 numbers: 6-8, 6.34 ERA in 99 1/3 innings. He allowed 15 homers, 29 walks and struck out 76. Opponents batted .320 against him and the numbers were about even against righties or lefties. Batters jumped on the first pitch they saw from Colon in 2007, hitting eight homers on first pitches and sporting a .423 batting average (30-for-71), including 20 RBIs.

I agree. The rangers' pitching stinks, another bad pitcher won't really help, but it won't hurt either. Their plans call for trading away a young pitcher with little experience and bringing in an again vet at the end of his career doesn't exactly make sense, but hey... its the Rangers.

When a team needs picthing anything they find in the market is useful. Colon is the type of player that will come back strong after a injure offseason. He did win 21 games in 05. The Rangers should take a chance with him but no more than 2 years. His Contract in the furture with any team should certainly contain Incentives.

Chrisitian the Yankees don't want to take a chance with him because of his age and injurie history. They wan't to give their prospects a chance to show them what they got. Oh yah good observation Christ colon is 34 not 38 but who didn't know that.

That is an imposter. Apparently someone enjoys my posts so much that they have used my handle.
I would never want Colon as a Yankee. I think we have enough with Joba, Kennedy and Hughes with Pettitte and Wang. Let's not forget Mussina who may be good as a spot starter.

The Dallas Morning news made a mistake but in all actuality did they? There is no way Colon is only 34 years or even 38 years old!
Bartolo Colon is probably around 41. He may have start playing baseball 34 years ago but again there is no way he is only 34 years old.
Hey Jimbo......If the TIGERS stay healthy I really can't see them losing either and I also believe Willis is better than Verlander and that is SCARY.
Cabrera? MY GOD IS HE GREAT. I still cannot believe he is a Detroit Tiger.

The old bad thing is that DETROIT has Mexican Town so Cabrera better keep to the salads with lo cal dressings.
I hear he is really in shape. I hope so. Even a FAT Cabrera would be great but if he keeps his weight down then all the better because he is playing at the corner.

He's certainly worth a look. Colon was a dominent pitcher a few seasons back and considering Daniels has traded all of our young prospects that could've filled in as a #5 starter you might as well take a chance on an older Vet looking to make a comeback. If you get lucky you might strike gold and he plays good enough to either help push you into the playoffs (unlikely) or use as trade bait later in the season (much like Gagne)

Colon would be an improvement over Padilla or Lowe. I am not sure where Lowe fits into the Rangers plans this year but Padilla is the #2 pitcher and you can not get much worse than he was last year

Bartolo Colon should be able to get a 1yr deal with the Ranger, and improve the team. With a rotation that includes Kevin Millwood (their ace), Vicente Padilla, Kameron Loe, and Robinson Tejada..the addition of Colon can only bolster the Rangers' arms. Still last place in the AL West though.

I think the Cardinals need to pick up Colon, especially if he'll be ready for the beginning of the season. Other than Adam Wainwright who do they have? Braden Looper? Joel Piniero? Anthony Reyes?

All I can say is enjoy a fat shell of his former self, 2005 may as well have been 1985 as far as his velocity and arm strength go. I will say this about him though, he is a perfect example of what WILL happen when a pro athlete does absolutely nothing to maintain his physique.

how does this GM still have a job. He aquires Josh Hamilton, who if he stays clean, is a future all star and potential MVP, but while doing so he gave up the organizations top pitching prospects. what has been the problem in texas for 20 yrs? Pitching, and he has made no move to get any pitching. the one move he did make was to get an injury prone adam eaton for a young star in chris young. and oh yeah...he also traded alfonso soriano for brad wilkerson. this guy is brutal!!! why not go ahead and sign every injury rittled pitcher available. Guardado and now Colon, i am sure there are more.
