What exactly is Jose Reyes thinking these days? Like New York Mets fans, Reyes expects better play at shortstop and showed his frustration by throwing a fit on the field. The Mets edged the Yankees, 3-1, Sunday to leave Shea Stadium for St. Louis with a four-games-to-two Subway Series triumph, but Reyes appeared to have another meltdown for the second straight game.
With two outs in the seventh inning, Melky Cabrera sent an easy grounder to Reyes, who threw high toward first, pulling Carlos Delgado off the bag. It seemed Delgado would be able to catch the ball and tag Cabrera, but the ball glanced off the tip of his glove and then bounded into the Mets' dugout, giving Cabrera second base. Reyes was charged with the error. What followed was a Little League-like temper tantrum. As the next batter, Jose Molina, was flying out to right field to end the inning, Reyes threw his glove and sunglasses to the ground, letting everyone at Shea witness his lack of self-control. Reyes later said losing his cool was a result of a season's worth of fielding frustration.
"I don't feel happy with the way I've played defense so far this year, so I've got 11 errors, so I don't feel happy," Reyes said. "That's an easy play for me right there."
Interim manager Jerry Manuel brushed off the error as part of the game and said he didn't bother sitting down the shortstop to address the outburst.
"Physical errors happen all the time," Manuel said.
"I made a lot of errors on routine ground balls," Reyes added. "That's not me. That's why I got mad, because I've got plenty of time to throw that ball in the chest to Delgado. That's not the way I want to play shortstop. I didn't play that way last year."
Reyes is right about that. His 11 errors this year almost match the 12 he committed all of last season. At the season's halfway point, Reyes is on track to set a career high in errors, surpassing the 18 he committed in 2005. At this point last season, he was also hitting .319, not his current .296.
