The New York Mets missed out on a deal for former Chicago White Sox right hander Javier Vazquez, who was dealt to Atlanta. On the surface, Vazquez appeared to be exactly the type of starter the Mets needed: dependable and durable. In each of the past nine seasons, he has pitched at least 198 innings, recorded at least 150 strikeouts and won at least 10 games. How many Mets starters can be expected to do that next year?

Johan Santana is one. John Maine is coming off bone spur surgery and is hardly a sure thing. Mike Pelfrey took a huge leap forward in 2008 but, having thrown 200 and 2/3 innings (48 more than he had in any other season in his career), he could be in for a slight drop-off next year. Both could excel in 2009, too, but the Mets can't bank on it.

Judging by the White Sox' haul for Vazquez and Boone Logan, the Mets certainly had the prospects to get the two players. But Minaya may be saving up for a run at a closer (if his winter meetings pursuit of Francisco Rodriguez and Brian Fuentes goes awry), relief help or a to-be-determined starter, according to the New York Times.

The trade route may wind up being the Mets' best bet for starting pitching help now that Derek Lowe and old friend Oliver Perez, both Scott Boras clients, seem headed for multi-year deals at lengths and costs that would exceed the Mets' range. They may be less inclined to make a run at another steady right-hander, Jon Garland, now that he's been offered arbitration and, as a Type A free agent, would cost them two draft picks. If they sign either K-Rod or Fuentes, who are both Type A's, as well, it'll cost the Mets those picks. But if the Mets, as expected, cannot sign Perez, they would receive two picks in return.

What do the Mets do? Hmmm, take a seat, bend over, put your head between your legs, and kiss the 2009 season good by. BTW, Santana will want out next.

Good move, Omar. Everyone wants a reasonable pitcher with good longevity but an ERA of almost 5.00-nine years in. Let's wait for the economy to creep into baseball salaries and pick up top line talent at reasonable prices

Vasquez would of been a good pick up, a reliable innings eater. Still need a bullpen.

Omar made up for the 07 collapse with pulling a rabbit out of the hat (Santana). We need another rabbit this year. If he doesn't pay 15m for a closer, I'm not paying $75 for seats.

Vazquez wasn't the answer, although he is latino so i'm shocked Omar didn't take a stab at him. What the Mets need is a BULLPEN.

the mets should have taken vazquez when they had the chance. hes a much better pitcher in the NL and could have been a good #3 behind santana and maine. with perez wandering and pelfrey an uncertainty, im surprised that a team with so much money like the mets can have such horrible problems in the starting rotation. guys like benson and glavine were busts over the years and pedro martinez is done. as for the closer role, minaya would be an idiot to not go for jenks. y risk losing two draft picks by signing K-Rod who wants 5yrs $75M or fuentes who wants 3 yrs $30M. i say make a blockbuster deal. im a diehard Sox fan we will give u dye and jenks for fernando martinez, jose reyes and a minor league prospect. seems fair. jenks strikeouts maybe down this year but thats because he wants to be a true pitcher and not blow his arm out with fastballs left and right. besides this is a guy who tied the major league record with 41 consecutive outs in '07. and he hasnt even hit his prime yet. as for dye you get a solid veteran bat to compliment an outfield with chavez and beltran. minaya should go for this. to have reyes and ramirez in the sox infield would be gold. u guys still have beltran, delgado, david wright, losing reyes wont be horrific. u can always make a play for furcal or renteria for the short term.

So he's going to Atlanta, big deal, he will just get hurt down there anyway, like the rest of their pitchers have over the last 3-4 years. I say trade for Garland, sign fuentes, make a legit run at Manny, and get a couple of durable bullpen guys, and lets take this thing down.

Wow...you guys that have already posted are really ignorant...for starters...the everybody that usgr007 mentioned (Vasquez, Lowe,Pevey,Man-ram,O.Hudson, Furcal, Perez, Sabathia, D.Oliver,Garland) half of them arent needed by the Mets and the other half havent even been signed yet so you cant say that the Mets are missing out...secondly why on earth would you want Vasquez? I would take Ollie over Vazquez and last #1...What about Maine and Pelfrey...do they not count as starters?

I don't think this is about the 'cheap Mets owners' at all. The Mets had the highest payroll in the NL last year, and for what; the 4th or 5th best team? All right; if they didn't choke they'd have been the 2nd best team. Aside from Santana, who is definitely one of the premier pitchers in the game; the Wilpons have not shown that they're cheap or unwilling to spend. If I was the Mets owner; I'd be afraid of Omar and how he spends my money. He'sproven that he can't evaluate talent, and he can't be trusted with an open check book. THAT's the problem. Can someone please tell me any significant difference between the '07 Mets and the '08 Mets, specifically in the bullpen? Forget about Wagner going down. Their HORRIBLE middle relief corp was the same damn thing in '08 as the one that collapsed in '07. That my friends falls on one Omar Minaya.

One more thing. I have NO problem with the Mets starters. While I'd like to resign Ollie, they can live without him and plug Niese in there. I'd also invite Pedro to spring training and let him compete for the 5th spot, which I think he'd win. By the way; oh great; Omar agreed to terms with Nelson Figueroa!
    Here's my Met Christmas list in order of need;
    1. Middle relievers (7th and 8th inning guys)
    2. Closer
    3. Another bat in the line-up
    4. Upgrade at catcher (see number 3 on the list)
    5. A new GM
    6. The Wilpons sell the team
    7. Plaxico goes to jail. What's this have to do with the Mets? Well, nothing; but it would make me feel good!!

Some of the comments above are beyond ignorant, they're just stupid. It seems nowadays that some people are more fans of just bashing teams rather than routing for them. Of all you idiots out there, tell me how many big name free agents have signed thus far? How many mega trades have been made to date? None you morons...why? Because they are all waiting for the winter meetings to jockey for position, mostly based upon where Sabathia ends up and at what salary. It's slotting just like the NFL Draft. Once Sabathia signs then several FA's will sign which will then determine who has to make trades as plan "B". Why should the Mets just sign everybody ala the Yankees and give up draft picks galore when they can wait it out and go either route, Free Agency or trades. That's why Minaya is waiting...just like everyone else, to see who signs where and for how much. Once the first chip drops most of them will follow quickly. Vasquez is just noise right now...much like the inane comments of the morons above.

I would take Randy Wolf over Ollie Perez AND Vazquez! Steve C is right, the only way to really get the Mets on the right course is if the incompetent Shilpons sell the team and the new owners get a decent general manager in here. If I trusted that idiot Omar, I think the best way to fill all the holes the Mets have, without mortgaging the future, is to trade Johan Santana for a huge package of young players. That in turn would give you the flexibility to acquire good players through trades, while cutting your salary. Let's face it, the Mets aren't going anywhere this year, or under the current regime, for that matter. The problem with this idea is I don't have the faith in Omar that he could identify useful players to acquire. Basically Mets fans, as long as Fred and Jeff own and run the team, they might as well be Mutt and Jeff.

    PURE BRILLIANCE !!!
Omar is an absolute MORON !!!!
Yahoo really has to update Omar's picture.....it looks like he's asking if the question is directed towards him. Like they'd be asking someone else at a press conference.

The Mets fall into the category of many other teams, they spend a bundle on one player (Santana) and now all of a sudden they can t find their wallet. Thats why free agents have to look at the long term. If I sign with this club, how much more future improvement can they or will they be willing to make. The Mets went shopping at Saks 5th Ave last year ,and now are shopping in Johns Bargin Basement. The Angels are facing the same with Tex. if they sign him they probably won t see another FA for at least 6-7 years. and its not how rich an owner is, its how much hes willing to spend for improvrmrnts.

JP - Before you go on praising that ass Minaya, you should consider the signings that have been finalized thusfar......as a handful of them could've been accomplished with what the Mets have to offer. Street , Wolf, and Vasquez are all players which would improve this team and Hudson is another..........but Omar the idiot has his heart set on Fuentes and/or K-Rod....and therefor he SEES NOTHING ELSE. I bet he cries if he doesn't get both of these "boys".......then they can sit around the new clubhouse and dance the Salsa and Cha Cha all night.

    pml,
Good job as usual. When will you want all Hispanics out of American baseball? I have stated this before. If a guy can play it doesn't make any difference what his nationality or skin color is. I have no idea what yours is outside of BIGOT. If anyone is to blame on the shape of this team in 2009, good or bad, it is Minaya & the owners for keeping him.

Wow. I do try to be courteous (not always successfully) on here, so I'm trying to find a delicate way to describe your proposed Jenks/Dye for Martinez/Reyes trade. It's a difficult task.
I'm simplifying a little bit, but Jose Reyes IS the Mets. When he's getting on base, they win. Period. He is as close to a lock for future NL MVP as there is. He's 25 years old and has placed in the MVP voting in four straight years. He's locked up at below market value for 3 more years. It's not even worth discussing the other guys. This might be the most ill-considered trade proposal I have read on Yahoo! message boards ever, and that's saying something.
    Sorry if this seems harsh.
