The Mariners made all sorts of trades and acquisitions in the offseason to put themselves atop the expectation chart in the American League West. But if their pitching can't come through, all of it may have been for naught. Lee's injury has some on the team concerned and the front office would apparently like to sign another pitcher as insurance. The deal Washburn turned down was apparently for less than the one-year, $1.5 million contract the Mariners offered Erik Bedard(notes) in February.
Washburn's agent, Scott Boras, supposedly had him turn down a $5 million offer from the Milwaukee Brewers so you have to think he's hoping Seattle will increase its offer.
