Brad Penny had a serious scare Saturday night, the likes of which he had never experienced. Home plate umpire Kerwin Danley, who was hit on the right side of his jaw by a 96-mph fastball from Penny that sailed past catcher Russell Martin, was on his back and not moving.

The mishap in the fourth inning of the Los Angeles Dodgers' 11-3 victory over the Colorado Rockies at Dodger Stadium resulted in a delay of more than 10 minutes and camera flashes to go off in every section of the stands as Dodgers trainers attended to the umpire. Danley lost consciousness for a few seconds, but was coherent and breathing as he was being treated at the scene.

He waved to the crowd as he was lifted onto a stretcher, and he was then taken by an ambulance to Good Samaritan Hospital for precautionary reasons. Crew chief Greg Gibson said Danley was receiving a CT scan at the hospital, but was talking. After the game, the Dodgers said Danley was expected to be released from the hospital later that night.

I saw this on TV. I wonder why Russell Martin didn't catch the ball? As with the report on TV, this article offers no explanation as to what went wrong. The ump is lucky. It could have been far more serious.

"I wonder why Russell Martin didn't catch the ball?"
TV announcers describe a signal mixup between pitcher and catcher. The replay seems to support this: Martin's glove was setup in anticipation of the ball dropping low outside but it rose high outside instead. Although outside the strike zone, it didn't seem like a particularly wild pitch - it just broke the wrong way and was howling fast, barely missing Martin's head and hit the ump.

tell you what that ump is one tough cat, to take a 96 mph fastball to the lettuce and be ok says something. The Dodgers swept the rockies GO BLUE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

thomas g yea swimmer in a wet suit 150 yards out, must have looked like a slow swimming seal, the last 3 fatal attacks were swimmers not surfers. tennis uses high tech, fans seem to get into it. right now they use that box on the tv screen in baseball and it makes the umps look bad at times.
