Twins-Mauer talks slow in starting

The Minnesota Twins haven't been hounding Joe Mauer(notes) about a contract extension just yet and the team's catcher and most important offensive player apparently hasn't been trying to get the talks started yet, either. But folks in the land of 10,000 lakes aren't concerned that this contract extension isn't going to happen.

The word is that Mauer is a patient man and isn't taking offense at the Twins' lack of energy toward signing him to an extension. The man so known for his sideburns that the team had a "Joe Mauer Sideburns Night" this summer apparently very interested in staying with the Twins, which isn't a shocker when MLB points out that his agent also represented such fellas as Cal Ripken Jr. and Kirby Puckett who are both famous for staying with an organization for the entire length of their playing careers.

The site also reports that former Mauer housemate Justin Morneau(notes) will be recovered from wrist surgery in four weeks and should be totally ready to go in spring training.

The Twins will more likely trade Mauer for prospects and players who sat on the benches the majority of the time. After that happens Justin Morneau will want to leave too.

With the new stadium coming the Twins need to sign him now while the money is there.

As much as I'd love to see Mauer in Boston, I hope he stays in Minnesota.

Home town loyalty won't mean anything to Mauer when the Yankees or Red Sox offer him the fattest contract a catcher has ever seen in the history of MLB.

Hate to say this, but Mauer in yanks uniform in 2010. After this year, Yanks saved like 40 millions? Don't see what's so hard to sign him. GO YANKS!!!

Those Twin "fellas", Mauer and Morneau, will take Minnesota to the Series next year. That agent "fella" who signed those other "fellas" to live long contracts to their respective teams, will keep those "fellas" aboard.

Mauer's not going anywhere. He plays for a good organization, a new stadium opens next year, and it's his hometown. I don't see him leaving.

Good luck with that WS next year #9. The Metrodome won the Twins a couple of extra games a season thanks to opposing fielders not being used to tracking balls in the cieling and misplaying balls off the astroturf. One of those games was against Detroit this year with Justin Verlander throwing a gem before Don Kelly lost a ball in the dome. That inning won the game for the Twins and if they'd been playing in an open air field they probably wouldn't have forced the one game playoff in the first place. Twins fans are going to start to really hate Target field since it makes the game more fair. And have fun with the couple of extra double headers a year thanks to games being snowed out in April!

evil, I hate to see Mauer leaving the twins but if he does...NYY is the perfect home for him! I'd make this move b/c I would like for Posada to step aside as a full time catcher! Can't catch and he can't throw b/c of aging as a result he calls for fastballs all of the time when runners gets on! However, we sure could use him along with Matsui as a DH. Please don't bring back Damon!
AJ's last 10 games has been terrific even without his 97mph fastball...he has never been that good in his career! Has everything to do with Molina. Molina was great behind the plate last night and so was AJ. His first year is coming to an end and for the guy who said Lowe will out pitched/out duel AJ...we will re visit your nonsense statement/prediction soon! You know who you are...just stay toon!!!

Certainly the Red Sox could use a catcher, but as a baseball fan as well as a Sox fan, it is bad for the game when high profile stars like Mauer are taken away from small market teams like the Twins where they have established a loyal fanbase. I hope he stays put.

I was talking to a Yankees fan a few months ago. He said they already have some young catcher that's supposed to be good and that will replace Posada. Don't remember his name. I doubt Mauer will go there. He'll stay in Minnesota. As much as people think he's going to go elsewhere, he's not. Mark my words. This is his home. The dude already has enough money to be satisfied. However, if he does go somewhere else, I'll burn my Twins jersey and start cheering for the White Sox.
    Don't go, BP Amoco.

I love those idiot yankee and red sox fans out there who think that every good player in baseball can be bought out... Sorry fellas- some players in this game still have a soul ( and believe it or not some don't do steroids either... although I know its hard for you to understand with big papi, and a-roids on your respective rosters)... Mauer will stay... the deal will get done- sorry guys... he isn't going to sell out like everyone on your team did...

I guess you didn't read post 6 by Sox Boy or my post 15. Two Red Sox fans who hope Mauer stays with the Twins even though Boston needs a catcher big time. You would have every right to feel stupid about that post you made (17), but you probably don't.

Sox can sign Victor Martinez long term, he is a solid catcher. Mauer will stay with the Twins if they sign he before the end of they year no one will ever know what the sox or spankees offer him.

    JBIRD,
I like Martinez, good hitter, but I think he would be better suited to play 1st base. He may well have to catch next season for the Red Sox but I don't see him as a long term answer for the Sox at that position.

Mauer will stay if the Twins make a commitment to winning. That basically means signing and trading for some quality bats and arms. The Twins desperately need a third baseman, SS and or 2B that has some offensive ability. Orlando Cabrera is one solution and his positive impact on the team down the stretch is enough for the management to believe he is a positive signing if they're able to do it for a reasonable amount (somewhere in the range of 4-5 million x 2 years). Making a deal for a player like J.J. Hardy could help Mauer feel like the Twins are going to continue to make moves to winning. The moves made for the stretch run were pretty good but had they made a deal for Halliday and signed Halliday to a long term deal, that would have been a clincher. The fact is, there are players out there who just don't want to come here and only want the money, fame and playoff potential that teams like the Angels, Red Sox and Yankees bring. I can't blame them but Minnesota has lot's of positives that come with the small market and Midwestern flavor of this upper midwest community. Mauer certainly understands that as does Morneau. The players that are here and were here have always been willing to stay if they were paid close to their market value. The problem is we haven't been able to approach those figures with the old Metrodome deal. With the new stadium, finanically the team is much better off and may now be able to sign their veteran players. The made mistakes recently in not signing Torii Hunter and Johan Santana when the opportunity presented itself. Hopefully they've learned their lesson and will sign Mauer with or without a hometown discount. BTW, Santana also said that he'd sign for less if he felt they were committed to spending the money to improve their team. It's unfortunate that when they traded Castillo to the Mets for a couple low level minor leaguers it looked like a move to save money. (It didn't help that Castillo was a good friend of Santana's). The move to not resign Hunter left us looking for a power right handed bat (Delmon Young) and left us primed to have to trade away Garza to get Young. Not signing Santana left a void which we find ourselves still trying to fill in looking for an ace to make a real playoff contenders. We should have known, true shutdown #1 pitchers just don't grow on trees. You've got to hold onto them when you've got them.

I think Tyler K was talking about posts 1,3, 7,8, 13 and 14 those are the idiot Yankee and Red Sox fans he was talking about. Two posts by you and someone else and six saying he will go to the Yankees or Red Sox. More stupid fans here than you think that think the Yankees and Red Sox think they can but whoever they want because they have the cash. You know that you will see alot more of those stupid fans before this rumor putters out. You feels stupid yet real deal? you should.

Poster 1 doesn't say who he is a fan of. Poster 7 thinks Mauer will go to either the Yankees or Red Sox but doesn't say which team he is a fan of. ( hint, it's not both). The only Red Sox post calling for Mauer to be traded to Boston is 3, and he isn't obnoxious about it. I will let Yankee fans defend their own if they care to.
