MLB - Sports Rumors

“LyleToronto Blue Jays first baseman Lyle Overbay(notes) is soon to be goner, according to the Toronto Globe and Mail.

The paper says it is "90 percent" likely that Overbay will be just a name in the history books for the Blue Jays by the time the winter meetings are over in early December. The 32-year-old is scheduled to make $7 million next year, which is pretty good for a guy who only hit .265 with 16 homers and 65 RBIs. The Seattle Mariners supposedly had some interest in Overbay but it isn't clear where he'll end up.

Meanwhile, MLB.com is reporting that the Jays have an interest in free agent catcher Yorvit Torrealba(notes). The San Francisco Giants and Torrealba's former team, the Colorado Rockies, supposedly want him on their rosters as well so this may end up in a bidding war.

The Blue Jays have no pro catcher right now since Rod Barajas(notes) is a free agent.

Yorvit back in Frisco? An interesting thought while they bring along the phenom (to go with the franchise)...YT is a decent defensive backstop, has had a penchant for getting key hits and also absolutely killed the GIANTS on a few occasions while in a Rockies' uniform. Much higher odds for this signing than bringing Benji back, that's for sure!

we want carlos delgado back in toronto.
but why is the article dissing overbay's number? his OPS is .838.
at 7 million, he is a bargain. if you want a premier slugger a first base, you have to pay 15-20 million per year. (see albert pujols, mark texeira, ryan howard, prince fielder)
his batting average isn't high, but his OBP is a respectable .372 and he hits a bunch of doubles. not bad for a poor man's kevin youkilis.

btw sign michael barrett, paul lo duca, or ivan rodriguez.

Sorry Dagoldeneagle but ur just flat wrong on this one. Firstly `overpaid` has a history of injuries, can`t clutch hit and his OBP is mediocre and secondly NONE of those catchers are starter worthy now. Barrett, Lo Duca and Pudge are all past it and Barajas will be too expensive...time to bite the bullet and bring up Arencibia...having said that $1.4 for Johnny Mac`s INSANE!!!

I cant beleive someone just defended Lyle Overpaid's contract. Super nice dude. Horrible First baseman. When the Jays signed Lyle they werent looking for a "premier Slugger". But maybe an above average one. He batted cleanup for entire month for the Jays, sure, he hit over 300. for that month, but he had a total of 4 RBI's.
    Good Riddince Lyle OOOoooooverpaid.

beefylegz...i totally agree lyle is overpaid and his offensive numbers are mediocre at best..however he is an above average defensive first basemen..so dont knock him on that...however having said that i would hold the door open for lyle on his way out. and dagoldeneagle...i watched barrett in spring training last year and he CAN NOT play defense. he let so many balls by him and doesnt have a good enough arm to make up for that...and to boot his offense is not even close to what it used to be..so he would not be worth bringing in as a starter. pudge would ask WAY too much money and he cant perform like he used to. i think at the catching position defense trumps offense everytime..so a guy like barajas is a great guy to have..however he would probably ask too much money and he was plagued by an injury that he appeared to never get over last year...
in my opinion..bring up arencibia..but he doesnt start. sign raul chavez for next to nothing because he'll take it. chavez has arguably the best arm in baseball at the catching position right now..and he cares about winning..something alot of blue jays lack. Arencibia is knocked for his lack of defensive talent..so let chavez be his teacher..and let arencibia pinch hit every now and then when they need a couple runs or base runner. although chavez cant really be counted on for much offence..he would be an ok 8 or 9 hitting..and considering john mcdonald is now locked up for 2 more years..(YIKES!)...he would have to hit 9 because we all know johnny isnt swinging the hottest stick. on the hole the jays are prett much doomed this season..im predicting a 4th or 5th place finish in the AL east..and possibly 90 losses..i hate to say it..but without the cash or trades for guys like Bay Figgins Hernandez and Fielder..how can they compete against the damn yankees

I'll bet they have plenty of pro catchers. They just happen to be minor leaguers.

I gotta agree with dagoldeneagle #3 - Overbay is worth $7 mil. He can take a walk, and he slugs for extra bases. I wouldn't say he's a bargain at that price, but it's what the market dictates for players with his production and veteran presence.

Overbay is a bust. He had a great 1st year in TO and thats the type of production that would keep him as a Jay. A 1b position needs to deliver power and rbi production. Overbay delivers neither the past 3 years. Nice guys do finish last sorry Lyle you must go... You were lucky the Jays kept you this long...
