Steinbrenner praises Lester no-no

New York Yankees boss Hank Steinbrenner, who watched highlights of Jon Lester's no-hitter Monday night, said he hopes some of his younger pitchers can begin performing like Lester did the Boston Globe reported.

"Obviously, a great, great story," said Steinbrenner on his cell phone. "Certainly both Lester and [Clay] Buchholz are tremendous young pitchers and it shows you what a good job Boston has done developing those two kids. You have to develop your own. Nobody's going to give you talent like that."

Asked whether it bothers him that the two young Sox starters have pitched so well and his youngsters have struggled, Steinbrenner said, "Well, I think Joba [Chamberlain] has a chance to do that eventually once he's in the starting rotation. I think the kid we drafted last year [Andrew] Brackman has that chance. And I think Philip Hughes and Ian Kennedy will also eventually show what they can do. The AL East is gonna be tough in the future. There are a lot of good young pitchers in the division.

"But I think everyone is happy for Lester given what he's overcome," Steinbrenner added

    lmao
Kennedy is awful and might be a #5 someday at best.... Hughes will be solid... but will pitch as much as Harden does each year. Joba is your only hope for the future.... and you STILL have him setting-up Rivera (why?... stupid!)
Man, if there were only a top-notch SP out there like Johan Santana you could trade for
    Dohh!!

It's a proof that the N.Y. Yankee organization exudes class and decency, unlike the red sox.

jasmine,,, not all red sox fans are classless, and neither are all yankee fans. This red sox fan in VA thinks Hank's comments were well-intended. Yes your young pitchers are going to have their good days. Do like Hank is doing, give them time and soon, perhaps this year since it's still early in the season, the yanks and sox will be right where they belong come Sept,,, battling for first place in the AL East.
Any news on Joba's father. True sportsfans wish him a speedy and complete recovery.

Am I wrong but havent the Red Sox hit the Yankees 3 times as much as the Yankees have hit the Red Sox batters. How can you call the Yankees cheap shot artists?? All that happenend last night was Hawkins protecting the teams captain.

Taking a pitch on the wrist is one thing. Chamberlain, Hawkins and Farnsworth throwing directly at people's heads? Anyone remember Tony C.?

Let's get back on point here. It doesn't matter what uniform this kid wears, Lester is a feel good story. Anyone who has faced cancer or closely knows anyone who's faced cancer understands what Jon Lester has overcome just to put that uniform back on; let alone throw a no-no. Red Sawk or not I'm happy for him, and wish him the best against the other 28 teams out there.

It makes me feel good to see this kid Lester do well after what he's been through and I don't care what logo his uniform has on it ... I think Hank was just saying it from his heart and I also think he would love to have him in
pinstrips. I think all Yankee fans would, looks like he has a bright future in the game ....

Take a page out of your fathers book, tell the people who are running things what you want to do now, not later....Put Chamberlin in the rotation now, you need it...Get rid of the pitching coach, he's a minor leaguer.....Don't listen to the boys that think they know what they are doing, because you have to look at the record,,,,Boston is pulling away and you still have to beat Tampa Bay....DO IT HANK...

Hank really needs to look at what''s going on with his team. He's making the same mistake with his young starting pitching that Boston did...he's putting some of those kids in it too early. Just look at what Boston did with Delcarmen...as soon as they saw him throw a 103 mph fastball...they threw him into the sharks...same thing with Hansen...where is he now? getting lit up every night.
Develop your pitching. Do what Boston did in 2006 and use this year as a rebuilding year...get your team on the right page today so you can be ready for tomorrow.

17 makes a good point about Pitcher Development but with that staff the Red Sox currently have in place the Yanks need to move Chamberlain into the rotation now or face having the Sox pull away. If the Yanks want to have more patience call it a rebuilding year and be done with it.

Hey big p I think it could happen but I don't see ny getting swept after they got swept by the mets.I think tomorrow is an automatic loss cause kennedy is freaking garbage but part of the reason is he is not that
experienced.James I hope the yankees take the route u say put joba in the rotation because they will have nothing but garbage relievers to setup mo and farnsworth, hawkins, olendorf, veras, and ramirez too,but joba belongs in the bullpen he is perfect there.

Man it's nice to read good exchange instead of a bunch of usless hate mail. I played on conference championship teams of baseball, football, wrestling, and track me senior year and class is class, a good athlete is a good athlete, and good sportsmanship and play is blind to the colors being worn or the team represented, unless of corse you are a cardinal fan.(just kidding kind of). Thanks for the intelligent exchange. Yankee fan since the days of the Mick #7 Wes in Iowa.

Andrew (Post #12) is right on. Anyone, I don't care whether he is a potential future Hall-of-Famer like Roger "Rocket" Clemens -- or what uniform he is wearing -- Red Sox, Toronto, Yankee, Astro or whatever ---who throws a fast ball intentionally at an opponent's head should be immediatly ejected -- and severely punished by the League, as well as his manager if expects it or tolerates it. That is unconscionable conduct for a professional athlete and a disgrace to the game! And what kind of example is that to our little leaguers?! That is not only classless but should be prosecuted as a criminal assault.

It's good to hear some positive stories coming from Hank every once in a while....
Also I think the Yanks have to take it slow with their young stars ... Don't rush success... Even though I'm a huge yanks fan I have to say that I like the Boston approach with their young guns... break them in slow and even with some success give them innings back in AAA to dominate.... it builds confidence...
ps..... Rasner is starting to become a solid arm for the yanks... (could it be there is not as much pressure on him then Kennedy and Hughes)....
