This John Smoltz(notes) saga is apparently soon to be over. It's looking like the St. Louis Cardinals are going to be the lucky team to get the pitcher with the 8.32 ERA this season, according to ESPN.
Smoltz apparently doesn't want to waste any time and is going to make a decision today when his release waivers from the Boston Red Sox expire. Rumor had it that the Cardinals, Florida Marlins, Los Angeles Dodgers, and Texas Rangers all had interest in bringing the 42-year-old to their rosters.
Apparently, two former Atlanta Braves who now play for St. Louis, Mark DeRosa(notes) and Adam Wainwright(notes), have been calling Smoltz in recent days to convince him to come be the setup man for closer Ryan Franklin(notes).
The Cardinals may be doing a smart thing. In Smoltz's last seven starts, he had a 0.64 ERA in the first two innings he pitched. We shall see.
