Sabean calls deal for Dye, Martinez 'pie in the sky'

General Manager Brian Sabean quieted speculation the San Francisco Giants would deal for Chicago White Sox outfielder Jermaine Dye(notes) or Cleveland Indians slugger Victor Martinez(notes), saying both names were "pie in the sky," according to the San Jose Mercury News.

"The second player you're talking about "... even though (the Indians) are going nowhere, it would take a (Madison) Bumgarner-plus type of blockbuster deal," Sabean said. "And that's not going to happen because we're not going to trade Bumgarner."

Sabean also said that he hopes to promote scalding-hot John Bowker(notes) from Triple-A Fresno shortly.

    Bowker for Lewis sounds like a GREAT trade to me!!! Lewis is a minor league caliber fielder at best and his hitting is merely average for the bigs. Bowker showed some pop in his bat and his glove has not been an issue anywhere he's played be it RF or 1B.

    Withe the Indians not in contention it doesn't seem like they'd demand Bumgartner, maybe Timothy Alderson, Burris a mid-level prospect could get it done

    How about the Giants trade Lewis, Burris, and Ishikawa for Martinez. Promote Bowker up to play first base. Also, throw in Zito just to get him out of the Bay Area. No, wait - trade Zito to LA so when we play him we get a guaranteed win.

    James get ready to wear the pin stripes then because crapiro as you call him will trade any player. He totaly dismanteld what John Heart had built ( A true contender ), so he could show everyone how smart he is. Well he has shown them, just didnt work out to good for him. You let Omar go and replace him with Peralta. wow. what a dumb a$$. And Omar is just one of the many mistakes he has made. SO COME ON DOWN TO SHOP- @ INDIANS -PIRO.COM And fill your roster cheap and make that PLAYOFF RUN, while indians fans sit at home and watch real baseball teams play.

    really giants fans, ishikawa, lewis and burriss don't even get you a decent RP at the deadline. They are 40 man roster fodder at this point, nothing more.

    Ha, wow...
    Did you really just compare Ishikawa, Lewis, and burris to Nathan, Liriano, and Boof?!? Good grief.
    It'd cost AT LEAST MadBum and another top prospect or two for Victor Martinez.
    The guy isn't a free agent after the season. The deal would have to be close to a Teixeira deal (the 1st Tex deal). Not quite as good, but Victor does give you the ability to catch and split time with Molina this year and a gives you a good transition for Posey next year or 2011.
    Tribe has a legit shot to compete in 2010 though (provided Wedge is GONE then). They won't trade guys this summer that are under contract next year (and relatively cheaply at that) unless they are blown away with an offer, like the Rangers were by the Braves.

    Matt with that bullpen how do you think they can contend. For Cleveland to compete they need to clean house. GM. Manager, pitching coach, batting coach. Get rid of Peralta, should have kept Derosa, Get Rid of Dead weight Hafner, Get Westbrookkhealthy or gone. Get a real catcher, one that can throw a runner out, not just hit the ball well. Clevelands infield is horrible. And if this is to much for the owner to swallow then he should sell the team to someone who wants to put a winning ball club on the field. IMO.

    Watching the Indians play for the rest of the year not doing it. but is still look at the scores every day, then im glad i did'nt waist my time watching. THANKS A LOT SHAPIRO. Base Ball is the greatest game in the world (IMO) and it would be alot better off without you in it shapiro. How the hell do you keep your job?

    I can't believe what Shapiro has turned the Tribe into during his time in Cleveland.
    God, I miss the days of complete season sellouts, win upon win, and perennial playoffs that John Hart and Dick Jacobs brought to this franchise. Dolan is too cheap to ever return the Tribe to that caliber of team. Shapiro is an idiot, and Wedge is a dolt.
    This team stinks, plain and simple. Dolan, Shapiro, and Wedge need to hit the freakin' road and take that over-rated lump Hafner with them.
    Oh, and by the way, the ballpark will ALWAYS be Jacobs Field to Tribe fans, regardless of who buys the naming rights. Progressive Field my a#$.
