MLB - Sports Rumors

“JimIt may seem like a no-brainer after the Colorado Rockies found their way into the postseason through the wild-card route, but it is looking like the team is going to sign both manager Jim Tracy and general manger Dan O'Dowd to multiyear deals, according to the Denver Post.

Tracy got to take over the Rocks this summer when his predecessor, Clint Hurdle, got canned in May. Tracy moved up from his spot as bench coach and led the team to a 74-42 record. With that kind of stat, Tracy is likely to win National League manager of the year this season.

His deal will apparently be done as soon as O'Dowd signs.

The Rockies turnaround after firing Hurdle and upgrading Tracy proved me wrong, once again! I remember stating that managers don't have that much effect on Major League performance.
Tracy should be manager of the year. He has my vote, for what it is worth!

This is a no brainer. I predicted the Rockies when they elevated Jim Tracy to manager, he would turn around this club. I just did known he would get them all the way to the playoffs. He is manager of the year!

I was very unhappy when the Rockies fired Clint Hurdle and hired Jim Tracy. I had been a Hurdle fan and thought Tracy was not a very good manager.
Boy was I wrong. The team turnaround was immediate and stark. Apparently Clint Hurdle had lost the respect of his players and couldn't control the clubhouse and Jim Tracy stepped in a righted a ship full of good players. He restored clubhouse confidence and made at least a couple of important moves in the starting line up.
He also seems like a really good guy who is about as straight forward as you could possibly want in a manager. He also is a good game manager. I was able to watch or attend virtually every inning since he assumed control and by my count he made less than a handful of questionable moves and only two of those were really serious - he knows what he is doing and I am glad that he and O'Dowd are going to be extended - both deserve it and I hope they are around for many successful seasons in Denver. Congrats guys!

    Nice post! John M.
Wish all posts, here, were as positive! Good luck next year!
Huston Street must be comeback player of the year. The A's dumped him after an unproductive season, and replaced him with Devine and Ziegler, and now Andrew Bailey.

Hated Tracy when he was with the Dodgers because he was a wimp but congrats on the job with the Rockies.

Rockies' hitters must take a cue from the Phillies' hitters. Ranking in the top five in runs-scored masks a weakness that a decent pitching staff can continually exploit: the Rockies' batters struck out almost 1300 times this season. With runners in scoring position, the batting average was barely above .240. I know Baylor gets a lot of credit when the line-up, especially the younger players, produces. But, Hawpe, Atkins, Barmes, and even Tulo, do not put the ball in play enough when the time is critical. Carlos Gonzales is a super-star in the making. A returning Francis will bolster the pitching staff, even if Marquis signs elsewhere. The Rox need Hirsch and Bucholz to rebound in 2010.
Still, a great season, and Tracy and O'Dowd deserve a lot of credit. Plus, I got to enjoy Hurdle on the MLB Network, and he was insightful and a pleasure to watch.
Looking forward to the Yankees and Phillies in the Series.

I think the Rockies can contribute their turnaround more to the placebo effect than to Tracy's brilliance. In other words, the team was going to play better for whomever replaced Hurdle. Tracy just happened to be the guy to fill in. He did very little for the Pirates, and he massively underachieved for the Dodgers. With the pitching staffs he had in LA, he should have been playing deep into the post season every year - not just the division series in 2004.

O'Dowd is a great GM and has really stocked up their farm with some ridiculous talent. He has done a great job drafting and really set this team up with what is most likely the best young core in the game.

As a Dodger fan, the Rockies are one of our competitors in the NL West, but Jim Tracy did an outstanding job this season. He also did a terrific job with the Dodgers, even though he was unfairly let go. If he wins Manager of the year it is well deserved!
