“BronsonThe Cincinnati Reds have got some cash problems (don't we all?) and they'd like to apparently trade off some of their higher-priced players to help alleviate the problem, according to FanHouse.

The Reds shelled out $71 million for its players this past season and the rumor is that the team needs to bring that down to around $65 million. Reds GM Walt Jocketty isn't hiding this fact, either: "We're going to probably have less to spend this year than we have in the past," he said. "It just depends on how [ticket] sales go this off-season."

Attendance at the Great American Ballpark dropped by more than 15 percent from 2008 to 2009. The candidates to get chucked over the side in Cincinnati appear to be second baseman Brandon Phillips(notes), who will make a little less than $7 million next year; pitcher Aaron Harang(notes), who makes $12.5 million next year; and pitcher Bronson Arroyo(notes), who will make $12.25 million next season.

Surprised to hear Brandon Phillips name. I'm not a Reds fan but, I thought he was kind of the face of that franchise.

They won't trade Phillips... they will be most likely to to trade Francisco Cordero who also makes around 12 mil. Wouldn't surprise me if they looked to trade him to Philly who had troubles with, the keeper of the gas can, Brad Lidge...

Plenty of young arms, no worries, Brandon Phillips is the worst base runner I've ever seen, he'll get thrown out at second before the go ahead run crosses the plate, that makes him a great fit in Anahiem.

It does seem like Cordero would be the most likely option. Arroyo has earned every penny in my book.

    NEWSFLASH:
    To GM Walt Jocketty:
Maybe if you brought in quality talent and did not trade every person who shows a glimpse of talent (nor overpay for non-performing players) you might sell more tickets.
No one wants to pay $65 a crack to watch people from the minors and other teams scrubs?

Ok, let Arroyo go. Let Harang go. Let Coco go. Just don't let B-Phil go. I am a fan from the 80's teams (I'm 28) and see Phillips as a nucleus of this team. Even if he isn't producing on the field, he is a great clubhouse presence. Not too many teams have a guy like him. With the young pitchers that we have in Louisville, we will be fine. I have never liked Arroyo or Harrang, and am somewhat embarrassed to say that they are our "aces". Let them go. I would like to see us hang on to Coco, but not to give up Phillips!

I agree you bring a winner to the town you sell freakn tickets, I am totally sick of this, we live a good ways away but we still would take in 5-10 games a yr, last yr once, only because I cannot sit and watch a team that doesnt hustle and the manager has NO clue how to run a team, this is becoming a joke to not only us but the rest of AMERICA. Put us down for 4th or 5th again next yr and count me out on coming to a game until positive changes happen. Jocketty you want to watch ticket sales drop more? just keep going in this direction then you and your buddies can have your own private viewing of MLB.

Jockety is at the baseball GM's meeting. He's got a couple of pretty good, solid veteran pitchers who make a lot of money. Arroryo's market value cannot get any higher than it is right now. This is simply a ploy to get some teams to start bidding on some of the Reds players. If they can get the right deal, they'll do it.

Bronson's value is as high as it will be right now. If you can get quality young players ready to play now, espeically a good young catcher or a right handed slugging left fielder, you trade him. Let's not forget that Bronson was not so good prior to at the All Star break. I like Bronson but trade him for value.
Harang's value is not so high right now, I think you keep him unless some one makes an offer that knocks your socks off or until you know Volquez will be back late next summer.
Cordero is coming off an All Star year. He is a luxury not a neccessity to a 4th place team. Put Massett or Burton on the closers role.
Phillips is a good player; but not the face of the club. He doesn't hustle all the time but does play hurt. Dusty has fined him numerous times for things; but he is a fan favorite. I would keep him.
This Red's team is not as bad as many think. My next year line up if you trade Arroyo and Cordero for a good young catcher, shortstop, a couple of good arms and a potential left hander starter. This should put the payroll around 60 million.
    Drew Stubbs CF
    Paul Janish or new SS
    Joey Votto 1B
    Scott Rolen 3b
    Brandon Phillips 2B
    Jay Bruce RF
NEW LEFT Fielder or Jonny Gomes
    New Catcher or Hanigan
    Pitcher
    Pitching Staff:
    Homer Bailey
    Johnny Cueto
    Aaron Harang
Left hander I can't think of his name
    traded pitcher in deal above
Bullpen is always up in the air.
Let's not forget the true curse, George Grande has retired. I look for the Red to return to their winning ways.

Letting Phillips or Coco or even Harang go would just be a horrible move for the entire team. Arroyo on the other hand should be the very first in line to be kicked out of Cincinnati. The past two years have just been awful. He can't find the zone 3/4 of the time and probably plays his guitar more than he practices throwing strikes. Harang just needs a year without injuries and some freakin' run support and he'll be back to his old form. We haven't had a more reliable closer year in and year out than Coco and if we give him up, we won't find another one for quite a while. KEEP HIM!! Phillips is the face and leader of this team and that shouldn't change. Keep him at all costs.

Arroyo may have been nearly perfect the second half of last season, but he's barely a .500 pitcher (53-50) with a 4.00 ERA with Cincinnati. Over those 4 years he has a been a model of inconsistency, looking like an all-star one outing and minor league fill-in the next. He has admitted to taking numerous supplements/performance enhancers and has stated that he doesn't like pitching day games. He doesn't sound like a 12.5 million dollar a year pitcher to me. I think the Reds can get more value in 2 or 3 players with that money so they should try to move him while he is the most valuable.

Getting rid of Baker would be a terrific start. Then get rid of Coco, Harang and Phillips. That's the next move. Then dump supposed batting coach Brook Jacoby and get Eric Davis in there to replace him. The Reds will never be above a 3rd place team especially if they are spending less. A crappy team (thanks to terrible managing) is WHY ticket sales are down 15%. Who in their right mind thinks that trimming the budget will create a better team and that more butts will occupy expensive seats to watch ho-hum baseball? You want ho-hum, drive to Pittsburgh.

The Dodgers could use Phillips and Arroyo, and according to Colletti they should still be able to afford them. I'm not sure what they could offer in return that would interest the Reds though.

I agree with Stephen C... WTF!?! Y u gonna trade away the teams 2nd best 2nd baseman since the Big Red Machine era?? He's a gold glove winner!! Yes, dump off either Harang or the wanna be musician Arroyo. Ya keep Gomes, and Nix and send Taveras out the door with Baker!! Baker is a bum who couldn't manage a high school team 2 a state championship. I say got get Jack McKeon again or USA'S WBC coach!!

I don't see how they can let Phillips go. Nobody will be willing to take Harang. The best or only way to free up some money is to get rid of Coco, or Rolen. The Rolen move made zero sense in my book, especially for the money he is making. Massett could move to closer, I have complete confidence in letting him close our games. I want Ramon Hernandez back. Hannigan was good, but Ramon is as solid as they come, especially in clutch hitting situations. It will be a mess of an offseason, and I'm sure the Reds will make some small deals, but I expect the same team that finished the year this year. I've been thinking since about mid-season what it would take to get Hanley Ramirez. I miss the days of having an All-Star at SS. He would be the missing ingredient to our hopes for another playoff run. One of the Cards pitchers would be a nice addition as well. I should be a GM, my fantasy teams usually run the league.

I have been a reds fan sience 1949. You would have to say I stay with them through good and bad. I would hate to see any of them go, but how do you pay a pitcher with two loosing seasons in a row 12000000000. Philips is my favorite. If you cant trade Harang realease him . Unless some one ealse is dumb enough to pay him that rediculis salray,Resighn him for what his record deserves

Let's face it... The Reds aren't close to contending for anything at this point in time. They have a great young core... but are about 7 solid players away from being .500 They finished with the 2nd to last batting average in all of baseball, due to the lack of contact hitters in the line-up. The ONLY player to hit over .280 was Votto.
The 3 pitchers of Harang, Arroyo and Cordero combine to make around $36 Million....THAT'S HALF OF PAYROLL...... Votto, Bruce, Volquez, Cueto, Bailey, Burton, Dickerson, Stubbs, Balentien are all young players with high level potential. Find a spot for Big Alonso, Frazier is the SS of the Future and Mike Leake is still in the mix.... If trading Phillips can bring back solid prospects or MLB ready talent in return- then I don't see why not. Sign Placido Polanco and get some veteran character on the offensive side of the ball. 2B is one of the easiest positions to replace.
