“RamonCincinnati Reds catcher Ramon Hernandez(notes) could get paid $8.5 million next season if the team would just pick up his option. But it's not looking likely that the Reds are going to do that, according to the Cincinnati Enquirer.

It's looking like the team is going to buy him out for $1 million, which is still a nice payday for a guy who didn't play after mid-July due to knee surgery. The rumor is that the team will try to re-sign the 11-year vet after that.

Cincinnati GM Walt Jocketty has met with Hernandez's agent. "We've made some progress. I don't know if we're close. But we'll try to work something out," he said.

I hated to see Oakland A's let Ramon Hernandez go when they did. He has had productive years with both San Diego and Baltimore. Good Luck! Ramon

I wouldn't mind having him back at a cheap price. If he does come back though, Hanigan should still get half the starts, I think he earned that much. Hernandez has more power, both are about .270 hitters, but Hanigan is hands down the better defensive catcher. I also think he calls a better game than Ramon. If Ramon is fine splitting time and playing 1B when Votto needs a rest, then it'd be great to have him back.

They guy put up an OPS of .699 this year and had to have knee surgery. He'll be 34 next May too.
He's worth maybe $2M right now, TOPS.
The Reds might as well try and get Pudge to come there or trade for Kelly Shoppach. Shop has as much power or more, is younger, healthier, and put up a higher OPS despite hitting near the Mendoza Line.
Hernandez does provide vet leadership, which is never a bad thing.....but his skills are diminishing and fast....

    Bozo,
Do you have a cousin named Billy Bob? He hilarious!!
You are right on with your insight of Ramon Hernandez. He is worth signing, but for a reduction from 8.5 million dollars. Bad knees aren't good for a catcher. I know!

i agree with Mr. Bojangles. who cares when your manager is dusty baker! sign hernandez 4 a year with a team option for '11 that u only pick up if your next catcher isn't ready. in a couple years reds actually will hav a good offense with bruce and votto and philips and that alonso dude coming up. just keep him as a vet leader that keeps the young guys focused and you'l get ur money's worth out've him.

If Hernandez wants to win, he's go elsewhere. this is his perfect chance to do so and he is one hell of a catcher who will be in demand.
