Red Sox sign Bartolo Colon

The Boston Red Sox are taking a "no-risk, high-reward" shot on Bartolo Colon.

The Red Sox came to terms Monday on a minor league contract with the 2005 Cy Young Award winner. The 34-year-old righty, who last pitched on Feb. 6 in the Caribbean World Series, is expected to arrive in camp Tuesday.

The team's medical staff will evaluate the two-time All-Star, who has gone 7-13 with a 5.72 ERA while slowed by shoulder and elbow injuries the past two seasons. He went 6-8 with a 6.34 ERA in the final year of a four-year, $51 million deal with the Los Angeles Angels last season. If he is added to the Red Sox 40-man roster, he would get a $1.2 million, one-year contract and have the chance to earn performance and roster bonuses.

It would be nice to know all the particulars. But it appears the sox have an out at a certian datew if they are not happy and even if he makes the team it's for 1.2mil. Could be the steal of the year!

The Red Sux stole him from Los Metos. I hate the Sox but this has to be a good move.

He's washed-up. RSUX just have a ton of money and can throw some his way in hope of winning the lottery. Buying lottery tickets probably make more sense than signing Colon.

If he's already got shoulder and elbow injuries ...... they do not go away. It's a long season though. Use him when the sox are ahead, and shuffle him down to Pawtucket as a language coach.

If he wins at least 12 games he will be considered a steal, given the last 2 seasons he's had.

I'm surprised the Yankees didn't offer him 5 million a year when they heard Boston was interested. He is probably a bust but for the money it is a good risk for Boston .The Yankees should do the same with Garcia.

Hey Spankees fans...Colon is quite a bargain when you consider what the Pinstripes got out of Kevin Brown and Carl Pavano for MILLIONS OF DOLLARS! Even if he wins 6 games, it will be more than Pavano got in 2 years...Don't be haters Spanks!

Why would anyone question this move? As the article clearly states " the Boston Red Sox are taking a no risk - high reward shot at this"

He's basically what David Well's was in 2005 (with hair) - but instead of an expectation of a #2 starter..he's a spare part. Expectations - "if he can start 10-15 games" so the two rookies can keep their number of innings down to 170-180 on their first full season. Even if he's healthy (not a given) anyone who expects anything much more than Tavarez needs to detox. But for ONE PERCENT of their payroll, that's pretty good.

Shrek lives!! Actually this is a good insurance policy at little or no cost.
Now if the Yankees can do the same type of deal with Freddy Garcia.
My god, let Pavano die in peace. He's already an afterthought in Yankees fans' minds. Remember that the Sox wanted him just as badly. You guys must have forgotten about Matt Clement after Petey left. How'd that work out for ya Shannon and Chris?

I like this signing. He's got great stuff and he's coming cheap at little risk. The best he'll be is 2005 Bartolo Colon, the worst he could be is Matt Clement. That is, a Matt Clement that's at least $7 million cheaper.

I would say Clement worked out really well for us, 2 championships in 4 years...I will take that that to the 0 that the Spanks have in the same time frame.
    Go Sox!

Long relief out of the bullpen? Sounds OK. He might be effective for a year since the AL East hasn't seen him all that much over the last few years. The Angels might know something though, I can't recall any of their ex players from the last few years making that big of an impact. Please correct me if I'm wrong. Doesn't this guy go and pitch in the D.R. in the off-season? That's alot of innings.
