MLB - Sports Rumors

“AdrianThe Boston Red Sox are apparently going to try and get San Diego Padres first baseman Adrian Gonzalez(notes) this off-season via trade, according to the Boston Globe. The team supposedly thought about grabbing Gonzalez at the trading deadline.

The 27-year-old his 40 dingers and 99 RBIs this past season and led the majors in walks, which helped him gain a .407 on-base percentage.

He's "only" supposed to make $4.75 million next year and the Padres have a $5.5 million option for 2011. But the question is whether the Red Sox have anything the Padres want to make the exchange happen.

Adding fuel to the fire on this potential deal is that Red Sox assistant GMs Jed Hoyer and Ben Cherington are both supposedly in the running to become the Padres' next general manager. So if either one of those gets brought on board in San Diego, a smoother trade path clearly opens between the two teams.

Why would a general manager want to trade away the team's best hitter that cost's so little??!!! The who deal smells fishy.

Excuse me for not following the Red Sox, but are Youkilis or Lowell headed for free agency? I know they're saddled with Big Crappy for another year or two, so Gonzo wouldn't be going to play DH.

The Peavy trade made sense because he was making a lot of money on a bad team. This trade does not make sense unless they receive incredible value in return.

What confuses me, is why fire Kevin Towers, who made some good trades for young pitchers during the season, and finised up 37 and 25 since July? He did a great job with the limited budget ($40 million to work with). Getting rid of Scott Hairston for three good young pitchers to Oakland was a gem! Now hiring a GM from Boston to facilitate a trade of their best hitter to the Red Sox sounds like collusion for sure!

Victor Martinez, Jason Bay, David Ortiz, Adrian Gonzalez, JD Drew...some good middle of the lineup homegrown talent...b/c the Red Sox will never act like the Yankees and obtain an all All Star lineup... :)

Giants should try to get him, but they would probably have to give up Bumgarner and Posey at the minumum.

victor martinez was a product of the indians system. jason bay is from the pirates. david ortiz is from the twins. adrian gonzalez was a rangers alum. jd drew is from the cardinals.
one of the best things in the modern era is free agency, which mean teams are not restricted to homegrown talent. i hate homegrown talent. i want my team to go for the big names.
i don't see anything wrong with signing big names instead of watching a bunch of can't miss prospects turning out to be scrubs.

puffmcdragon - Bay is a free agent so he gets to choose where he wants to go and wont be traded. If something like that happened clearly it would be collusion
I think honestly the Red Sox will get hurt long term if they give up Buchholz and a package of prospects for Adrian Gonzalez. If they are going to give up quality arms its better to get a quality arm in the process so I still think Felix or Roy will be better options

Rumors have been flying about the Sox's looking to trade Papelbon so he would make nice trade bait. Wakefield did start in the Pirates organization. Lowell's hip did not get a lot better this year so I can see him being used as a reserve or trade bait as well. Kind of a throw in like he was with Beckett. Youk would move to 3rd and Gonzo would take first. There again it is all rumor so you can't put a whole lot of stock in it.

I agree, artist. There's a reason this is "a rumor". It depends what they'd have to give up for him, and they don't need him that badly..IMO, but it's worth thinking about:)

So are the Red Sox gonna play 4 1B's during some of these games next year or what? They already kind of need to move Lowell to get Vic and Kotchman enough playing time at 1B. How is Gonzalez gonna fit in here?
Are they gonna cut Ortiz then?
Even if they moved Kotchman in a deal for Gonzalez (though not sure why the Padres would want Kotchman with Blanks a 1B option), they'd still be tight with Youk, Gonz, Ortiz, and Vic all needed time at 1B or DH.
Go after a SS for crying out loud Boston. So sad that a team with the resources of the Red Sox can't find a solution there that last longer than a season.

Are you sure that's enough for Gonzalez? The Sox need to be fair. Maybe they should include Josh Beckett, Jon Lester and Dustin Pedroia to make sure.
