Rangers focused on trade for pitcher, not signing Fielder

The Texas Rangers are keeping busy right now trying to find a trade that will bring them a starting pitcher rather than throwing all energy into getting Prince Fielder or Japanese pitcher Yu Darvish, Fox Sports reports.

Some of the arms that the Rangers are looking at include Matt Garza of the Chicago Cubs, lefty Gio Gonzalez of the Oakland Athletics and Wade Davis of the Tampa Bay Rays.

This would keep costs lower for the Rangers, since Fielder is likely to get "at least $150 million" and the price for Darvish "likely will exceed $100 million when combining his posting fee and contract," Fox notes.

If Rangers ownership suddenly decides to increase payroll, the team could ramp up its pursuit of Darvish or Fielder, but the Rangers are simply trying to afford keeping together the majority of the team it had last year.

The biggest move the Rangers have made this offseason is signing closer Joe Nathan to a two-year deal for $14.5 million. According to Fox, the team spoke with the agents for Mark Buehrle and C.J. Wilson but didn't make an offer to either.
