Albert Pujols(notes) gave the St. Louis Cardinals until noon Tuesday to get a long-term deal done or negotiations would be tabled until after the season, but the two sides agreed to a 24-hour extension, according to the Associated Press.
Cardinals Hall of Famer Stan Musial is headed to Washington, D.C., Tuesday night to get the Presidential Medal of Freedom, and general manager John Mozeliak said Monday the club did not want to distract from Musial's special day, the AP reports.
Not only that, but half the people involved in the negotiations are going to the event, too. Chairman Bill DeWitt Jr. and Mozeliak are both making the trip, according to the AP.
Pujols hit 42 homers last year with 117 RBIs and was second in MVP voting to Joey Votto(notes) of the Cincinnati Reds. In the last decade, Pujols has hit more than 30 home runs and driving in more than 100 RBIs per season. He's also scored 100 runs or more in every season but one.
