Pudge asked Tigers for trade to Yankees

When Brian Cashman arrived at Yankee Stadium Wednesday in a not-so-good mood over the way the last-place Baltimore Orioles had cuffed around his Yankee team the previous two nights, he did not envision in his wildest imagination bagging a potential Hall-of-Fame catcher before the seventh-inning stretch.

But then, how could he know what Pudge Rodriguez was up to in Cleveland? How could he know the Detroit Tigers' perennial All-Star and Gold Glove catcher had become disconcerted over the decision of his manager, Jim Leyland, to give an increased percentage of the catching role to Brandon Inge? It seems nobody had an inkling of this until Rodriguez, who is a free agent after the season, asked for a meeting with Tigers GM Dave Dombrowski at the team hotel in Cleveland, at which he was the one who suggested a trade to the Yankees according to New York Daily News baseball columnist Bill Madden.

"They need a catcher and I want to catch every day," Rodriguez reportedly told Dombrowski. "Why don't you see if you can work something out?"

It turns out that the Tigers' most pressing need as they make a belated postseason run in the AL Central has been another power arm in the bullpen - a commodity of which the Yankees had surplus. As soon as his conversation with Rodriguez concluded, Dombrowski phoned Cashman and asked if he would be willing to trade Kyle Farnsworth, who's also a free agent after the season, for his 36-year-old catcher. It was essentially a deal of mutual "rentals" to hopefully help get both teams "to the finish line," as Cashman put it. Before he agreed to it, however, he wanted to check with his manager, Joe Girardi, himself an old catcher.

"He's the complete package," Girardi said of Rodriguez, who is hitting .295 and still maintains one of the stronger throwing arms in the game.

From Cashman's standpoint, the Yankees had already been asking a lot of Jose Molina, a career backup, and there was also private concern that he might eventually break down. With Rodriguez coming in, those fears have been alleviated, but it remains to be seen how the Yankee pitchers, all of whom apparently love working with Molina, will interact with Rodriguez. Despite Rodriguez's Hall-of-Fame credentials, his reputation is that he catches for himself.

"We are robbing Peter to pay Paul," said Cashman, "and I just hope this works out. It was one of the toughest decisions I've ever had to make, trading a good guy like Farnsworth who did everything we asked of him in what was at times a tough environment for him."

All the more reason Red Sox management need to stop trying to be tough guys with Manny Ramirez. Your team is getting swept and the once dead Yankees are making moves and going on hot streaks. If you trade Manny or alienate him further your season is done. No one ever sad they were bright up there in Boston though, but at least they hadn't screwed things up for themselves this bad in awhile.

It always seems that the Yankees, whenever they need to fill a void, Cashman & ownership always finds a way to fill it. The Red Sox are beginning to get into that and if the Manny trade goes through, the great Boston fans will have joined the hated Yankees in the land of the hated.

You can find reasons to hate the Yankees mostly because they keep winning, but they don't dump players. People criticized then for giving Mo and Jorge so much money but that was because they still wanted them and to reward them for what they had done in the past. They aso work hard to improve the team as their recent trades and signings prove. Pudge will help the Yankees now that Posada is out. As far as Manny is concerned. I respect him as a player. One of the greatest hitters in baseball. But his attitude is terrible. Jason Bay would not be such a downgrade from Manny. He hits for decent average, for power, can even steal a base or two and is much better defensively. He is also much younger than Manny and will help the team more in the long run.

Just trying to keep all you Yankee lovers honest- and have some fun at your expense. Stop taking this crap so seriously. Sheesh, no sense of humor in Yankeeland. (yes, the Yankees always, always seem to make moves- whether they work or not, you cannot fault them for trying to upgrade. See, I can be nice, too.)

You know it occurs to me that being humorous on a keyboard is not always evident. Sorry. But this is also why a lot of people cannot stand Yankee fans. you cannot take even the slightest bit of criticism (even in fun) without a knee-jerk reaction. While I will attempt in the future to make my humorous comments more evident, you Yankee fans might want to try practicing some restraint. The world will not end if the Yankees do not excel (it has been 8 years and counting now and the Universe is still intact HAHAHA). Stop being so thin-skinned.

I'm not sure there is anything they can do. Whatever marginal talent is out there, the demand exceeds the supply. Omar must be careful; whatever prospects we have should be protected. With Church almost ready, i believe the Metsies will be OK. We just need our bullpen to tighten up some. And why Ouch!?? we are 1/2 game out.

Can you see the Tigers trading Marcus Thames to the Mets for a pitcher? there was a rumor a while ago that the Mets were really interested in Thames and wanted him badly. Just wondering what your take there is on it

As you know I am a devout Yankee fan. But, I am a realist. I just don't appreciate people ragging on the Yankees when they do not have much knowledge of the game, if any. Just pure jealousy. I am not including you in that group. Ihope that you can see my point. I know there are Yankee fans that do the same to other teams. I am not thin skinned. I just don't like stupidity.

Depends on the pitcher. Wouldn't mind Thames, but now I hear Church may be close to coming back, so we are not quite as desperate for OF. Think we are more inclined to shore up the bullpen, but thieves are afoot. Too much demand for too little supply.

dav: I agree. I have been harsh in the past and tried to provoke stupid Yankee fans (certainly not you). But that gets old fast, and now I would prefer to be funny instead of confrontational. We all love our teams, sometimes to excess, and opinions will not change due to these posts. There are as many stupid Met fans out there, too. Trying to change my ways. Doesn't mean I won't make mistakes occasionally if provoked myself but will always try to stay calm.

During the off season-I would love to see the players(if they have the guts) to find a regular joe smoe job and seriously live off of the salary it pays. Maybe then they would appreciate what its is like to live a life and pay for entertainment like we do.Take in a hockey, football or basketball game and maybe even include the whole family if you can afford it!

I'm not buying that Pudge "asked" for this trade. In his interview last night, he was clearly still in shock over this decision and at one point even said he had planned to be a Tiger until he retired. I do agree that it's a win-win (provided Farnsworth doesn't turn out to be another D-Train), but I have a hard time believing Pudge asked DD to be traded to the Yanks. Hopefully this will work out well for both teams. Pudge will be deeply missed...

There are a lot of people out there that are trying to be loyal to their teams and I respect that. But, please attempt to have some knowledge about the subject and quit all the sex and other crap that has absolutely nothing to do with the post. This is supposed to be a mix of different ideas and enjoyable.

I didn't think Pudge was going to be here this year, so I am not surprised to see him go. BUT FOR FARNSWORTH?????????? He has pitched here before and he SUCKED. I have a feeling that this is not the only move that the Tigers will make before the end of the day today. God I hope not. If this is their idea of making a push for the playoffs...not very bright. I hope Farnsworth proves me wrong.
