Piniero leaving Cardinals?

“JoelJoel Piniero is the most important man in St. Louis right now. With the St. Louis Cardinals down two games to none in the NLDS against the Los Angeles Dodgers, Piniero is the fella taking the ball tomorrow for the team. He better hope for a good start so he can both keep the season going and bolster his free-agent dollars.

Piniero becomes a free agent this winter and it's not looking great for him to return to St. Louis even though he has said he really wants to, according to MLB Trade Rumors. The problem is that the Cards want to throw their money at re-signing fellow free agents Matt Holliday(notes) and Mark DeRosa(notes). Plus, the team supposedly wants to get Albert Pujols(notes) to sign a long-term deal this winter as well. Piniero made $13 million from the team over the last two years and is certainly expecting to make more than that.

So that could leave the 31-year-old Piniero out in the cold, even though he had probably his best season ever this year. But it does mean he'll likely get a raise from whatever team he does sign with.

With free agency not having many real good pitchers he will get alot of attention but this next start is the most important for him. That one start is the difference between a 2 yr deal and a 3+ yr deal and maybe millions.

Thanks for the memories Joel. You'll probably be moving on based upon limited resources. I hope you get at least one more win for the Birds on the Bat.
    Go Cards!

Screw Derosa, he is not a true everyday 3rd baseman anyway. Let him re-sign with the Cubs, where he wants to be. Pitching is much more valuable. Use a platoon next year and re-sign Piniero.

I know it's not over yet but according to Vegas...NYY vs. St. Louis in the WS! Some how that is not looking too good at this point. I got my bet down almost at the start of the season as NYY vs. LAD. Last year I picked the Rays to go to the WS and made good $.

The Brewers will probably sign Piniero--no, wait--the Crew only signs mediocrity (Looper) and tremendously overpaid, useless pieces of crap (Suppan) that once pitched in St. Louis......

After the missed fly ball in left field to lose an important game last night, St. Louis might consider letting Holliday go, along with Piniero if he loses tomorrow night. Fans will never forgive either one, just like Boston fans never forgave Bill Buckner when he lost a Series for them by letting an easy grounder go through his legs at first.

There was more than a dropped ball that ruined the Cards shot at evening the series. Remember rookie (far less than a) phenom Rasmus making a stupid out at third? The following base hit would at the very least forced extra innings with the implosion in the 9th. The Cards have definitley picked the wrong time to lose run production. The opposing pitching was average at best. They get paid millions....hit the damn ball!

You can't blame one guy. You win as a team and lose as a team. How do you think Holliday feels right now? I'm sure we have all made mistakes. Should he have made that catch? yes. did he? no. Franklin gets the next guy and we move on to the next game. Franklin gets the guy after that we move on to xtras. So what are we paying Franklin for if not to get out of those situations. He just got a big raise and hasn't been pitching well since. Not to mention we had a bunch of chances to score runs over the last two games, and have not done so. I think Holliday should have made that catch, but he isn't the only reason we lost two games to the Dodgers.

Loyd, Chris Duncan didn't sneak into Holliday's uniform. It was the same guy who has been in it all along. Am I the only one who noticed from the beginning that Holliday wasn't any better defensively than Duncan? He is just as slow and awkward as Duncan, but at least he can still hit. Duncan was a promising hitter, but I think the neck surgery did him in.

    str A's hooter.
Cardinal fans are not Red Sox fans! If Cards fan get their way, Holliday and Piniero will be back in 2010, regardless of the outcome of this series. Not wanting Holliday on their team because of one play, makes no sense at all.

Glaus,Kahill,Ankiel are for sure gone. Kennedy also will be off the books. Spend that money on Holliday,Piniero, and Derosa. Derosa has been playing hurt and is a huge asset when he can get healthy. He's worth keeping and resigning. If beer lovers will pay $9 for a frosty cold one then they will pay $11. Funding problem solved for Dewitt. I'm ready for 2010.

Who really cares. He has only had three seasons with 10 or more wins in 11 big league seasons. He will go somewhere and get overpaid and be a bust. We see pitchers like this all the time.

He'll be one of the top pitching free agents. He'll probably have a number of teams competing for him. I think someone in the national league will sign him. Hoping for the Diamondbacks who need a good #3 to go with Haren and Webb.

The worst part of game two was NOT Hollidays misscue. Yeah, not only embarrassing for Holliday, embarrassing for every Cards fan. However, the biggest bozo on the field was Franklin. The look on his face even before he threw his first pitch told the whole story. As soon as I saw the look in his eyes I knew the game was over and it would be the Dodgers who would win. The look in Franklin's eyes and on his face was a look of failure, a look of fear and uncertainty and mostly a look of defeat before he ever threw a pitch. Hey La Russa, why the hell did you put him in there? Eckersley he ain't! Franklin is no closer Tony, get him the hell out of St Louis and find a real closer. You should have put Smoltz in. At least, Smoltz has confidence in himself and in his abilities. He would have saved that game! Franklin lost that game, not Holliday. I bet Franklin is delighted that everyone is blaming Holliday.
