Piniella asking Cub fans not to panic

Lou Piniella and the Cubs have been on the road the last few days, so maybe they haven't heard: There is panic in Chicago. Panic induced by the Cubs. Piniella smiled at the thought as he stepped out of the visitors' dugout at Busch Stadium on Thursday. A smile hasn't come easily for Piniella these days, but mention panic and the Cubs in the same sentence, and the manager had to chuckle.

''Yeah, they don't need to panic,'' Piniella said. ''I mean, are we a 100-game-winning team?''

Before answering, here's a better question: Did Piniella think the Cubs were a 100-victory team?

If you had been paying attention all season, Piniella has been telling anyone who would listen this Cubs team had the potential to win 90 to 95 games — if everything went just right.

I am hoping a couple a days will revive our bats and cool of the Astros.
DLee and Ramirez have not been a threat to any team in the last 2 weeks.

Just for the record, I note that we still have the second most win totals in the majors, one behind the Angels. We have a 5.5 game lead, and our high all season has been 6. This despite our recent downturn. Harden and Z got good medical news lately, and we've won a couple close games.
In short, I'm still ever the optimist, and I think i have reason to be.
That said, I feel like I've been talking a few of my fellow Cubs fans from in off the ledge lately.

    Jeff,
You have performed a humanitarian service. What about the Yankee fans that don't know anything but at least the playoffs? Send roses I guess.

Cmon Lou, you have a 6 game lead in the loss column with just 16 left to play. If you can't make that hold up you don't deserve to get in.

    This Guy,
Keep your political mud slinging out of this forum. It is nasty, hateful far left zealots like you that convince Independents like me that there are too many nutjobs who want the Democrats to win.

When the Cubs swept the Brewers in Milwaukee a while back, all doubt was erased as to who would win the Central. The fact that the team with the best record rarely survives to make it to the WS in either league should be a bigger question mark for all the Cubs fans.
Hey, This Guy, This ain't no political forum! And I agree with "The Real Deal" , boo to all the far left zealots.

Let's not single out far left zealots, let's just leave all politics out of baseball talk.
That and religion, no point to stirring the pot further.

    dav,
maybe yankees and braves fans should form a support group for the younger fans that have just never known any different. remarkable streaks, both.
maybe hallmark should open up a whole new subdivision for disappointed fans.
personally, i've got a cubs christmas ornament that says "wait til next year". i'm hoping for the holiday i get to retire it.

What I would like to know is , who will determine if the 2 games with the Astros are meaningful enough to play?
Home field advantage? Astros close enuff to be wild card....14-1 in their last 15......not unfeasible?
