While it had no bearing on the outcome of the game, the Philadelphia Phillies and Florida Marlins engaged in a bit of interesting gamesmanship during the early stages of last night's game, which resulted in umpire Joe West's instructing Phillies starter Brett Myers to cover the tattoo that encircles his left forearm.

Phillies manager Charlie Manuel described the interplay thusly: Early on, he noticed the Marlins' first- and third-base coaches' straying outside their respective boxes. Worried that they could be stealing signs, Manuel conferred with the umpires between innings and asked them to keep the Marlins coaches inside the coaching boxes.

Florida, apparently annoyed at the request, responded by asking the umpires to require Myers to cover up his tattoo, citing it as a distraction to the Marlins hitters.

The move is not unprecedented. It gained notoriety in 2004 when Major League Baseball began requiring then-Toronto reliever Justin Miller to cover his heavily inked arms with sleeves after receiving complaints that they distracted hitters.

"I don't even know what was going on," said Myers, who allowed 10 runs in four-plus innings of the Phillies' 14-8 loss. "Then [second-base umpire] Joe West came in after the inning and said I had to put on sleeves because of a tattoo. I've had it for 3½ years in the big leagues, and now someone says something about it. It's all trying to get in my head, but that didn't affect me. It wasn't that hot. I'm from Florida. It wasn't a big deal. It had nothing to do with the way I pitched."

Manuel emphasized that he wasn't accusing the Marlins of stealing signs.

"I wasn't trying to be a smart-aleck or anything like that," Manuel said. "I just thought, 'Hell, they could be getting the pitches, [the coaches] are standing so far back' . . . They got kind of upset because, they thought I was nit-picking."

Joe West has been a nit picker ever since he became an ump. He is one of the worst things that has ever been part of baseball. He is all for Joe. If the leaders in baseball had the same character as Joe
West. Base Ball would have died long ago.

#9, #3 is most likely just a whining Patriots fan trying to deflect the art of cheating from his team. The Marlins played very good ball with a bargain basement team of young talent. Kudos to them!

#3 - "Myers giving up 10 runs in 4+ innings after shutting down all other teams as of late?"
Hey the Marlins just took advantage of the fact that if Myers gets roughed up for a few runs he falls apart, he don't have the mindset to bounce back. He is capable of shutting a team down but if you can string a few hits together he gets stupid (duhhhhh). His face becomes red and he looks like hes on the verge of crying.

marlins avg 16,000 fans for home games bottom in baseball and they are pretty good. because their payroll is less than the free money they get from the large revenue teams they spend minus 9 million on players.mets spend 138 million on players and give 24 million to the small revenue teams.marlins are like people on welfare driving caddies.i don't respect that. mets are doing their part to make baseball better.

You are pretty hard on the Mets. True, but hard. I think that is what is wrong with some teams. The owners don't want to build a good team due to the payroll it would entail. They would rather let the wealthy teams that pay the Yankee tax and the revenues from TV make up for lack of attendance income. Poor ownership.

That was smart wasn't it, Manuel's team is playing one of the hottest teams in baseball right now and he does his best to pi$$ them off. They have what it takes to sweep the Phillies, not saying they will but they sure are capable of it, especially since the Marlins miss Hamels and already got past Myers.

Ken i see your point . I don't care what any one says i don't think jimmy rollins was justified in insulting phillies fans. While i personally like jimmy r. and i can see why he was upset at the booing fans he totally went the wrong way handling that situation.

live4 - Right on with that. Welcome to baseball in Florida, they should sell the Marlins and Rays, they aren't wanted there. Move one of them to Vegas and one to Charlotte N.C., not sure how a team would do in Vegas but I'm sure Charlotte would love one.

Adam, I hear ya on that. Maybe they can build a 50 foot wide aquarium in the outfield wall.........well maybe not because one line-drive later they would be scooping up fish and glass from the warning track. I wonder what they would call that kind of delay.

Ken - Howard seems to have made a living off of pitcher mistakes. If a pitcher has his command Howard is defenseless. If I'm an opposing manager and I know my starter has been on point lately I would go after Howard without thinking twice, but if in my pitcher wasn't hitting his location on the previous batters I would think about walking him if needed.

lol I like it, P Tain.
Now, if they eventually get this new stadium with a retractable roof, they could set a precedent by being the first team to have an indoor "rain" delay in the history of baseball should that aquarium break.

what manual did was perfectly exceptable. but getting someone to cover a tattoo in retaliation come on that is a bit petty i think...but i also think that sometimes they just need to shut up and do what we pay them to do and thats PLAY BALL...not fun off at the mouth about the fans booing you...not telling the world you are the team to beat...JUST PLAY BALL!!!!

P Tain - when Howard is on he is hitting everything out, even good pitches. Of course, not all good pitches, but the guy's a monster when he is locked in this way. No pitch in the strike zone is safe.
Manuel is not the smartest - agreed. The fans love Rollins and Howard. That whole Rollins comment just came out wrong and people see it that way now. But a lot of Philly fans showed no class when they booed J-Roll after the incident - every time he made an out. I am embarrassed the way some people act.
The Mets may catch another break in the schedule (getting the Cubs after they clinch will be the first one) when they play Florida next weekend. Right now they sstill have playoff aspiratioins. They will probably be eliminated from contension a week from now. Of course, they're young and hungry and will still play hard.
