Phillies still pursuing Roy Halladay

“RoyThe Philadelphia Phillies tried to trade for Roy Halladay(notes) of the Toronto Blue Jays right up until the trading deadline in July and then settle for snagging Cliff Lee(notes) from the Cleveland Indians. He turned out to be a pretty good snag, giving the team an incredible performance through the postseason.

Now it appears that the Phils are right back in the hunt for Halladay, according to the Philadelphia Inquirer. Halladay just has one year left on his contract and the folks in Philadelphia would like him to spend it wearing red and white.

Blue Jays general manager Alex Anthopoulos is ready to listen to offers for the 32-year-old Halladay, who ended up with 17 wins, a 2.79 ERA, and 208 strikeouts in 239 innings pitched.

"Philadelphia is into winning now, and Halladay fits that," said a front-office worker of a rival to the Phillies.

What are the Phillies going to offer in return? Happ? I still think the Dodgers should get aggressive and offer up Billingsley and/or Broxton for him.

I thought Halladay would be a good fit for Philadelphia. They have a lot of dead wood in the bullpen, they should clean out first, to free up some capital. I don't know if Toronto will want any of that garbage in trade, though.

We had the pieces last year to make this happen. The Phillies have the farm talant to get this done. It would be a crazy rotation next year:
    Lee
    Halladay
Hammels - if he gets his head out of his A@@
    Happ
    Blanton or Drabek
    Thats nice right there!
    Go Phils!

#4, it's Halladay, not the outfielder. Phils need to make this happen, the Mets are pursuing him hard as well. It is a little risk move with only having to pay him for 1 season if something goes wrong.

he would be nice for the phils but they do not need him for happ and drabek and both outfielders. They should deal drabek and brown or taylor at most for him. #1 the dodgers wont get him for billingsley who sucks to much to start in the post season. Broxton is not enough and they need him to close. The phils can also sign Figgins to play right field and put werth in center and sign beltre or tejada for third and deal victorino with drabke, marson and a couple of other second tear prospects. I would be surprised if they get halladay but it could and it would be great. Then they would need to sign halladay, lee and werth to long term deals.

That's great! arthurshaub. Lidge can come in a blow all of the potential saves for this wonderful staff. They will all go nuts and try to pitch complete games. All will burn their arms up like the Oakland A's pitchers did under Billy Martin.

Phillies can punch their tickets back to the World Series if they make a deal for Halladay. The only real question is what are they giving up for him

The Phillies have plenty of talent to make a deal for Halladay. They had it back in Sept. but declined. Now Toronto really isn't int he driver's seat and will probably come down a bit in their demands. The Mets are a non-factor. Everybody knows they are not built to win right now. The Phillies are....

    Morning Hooter & joarby,
I think that the rest of the NL would say that is unfair if they sign Doc. I still believe that the Yannkees may have the inside track on him because of his friendship with Burnett. We will see. I also see my guys trading Chamberlain.

Apparantly Toronto and Philly are talking about a possible Hamels for Halladay trade. Supposedly the Phils organization is not happy with Cole and it goes deeper than just his performance this year. Not sure whether the talks are getting more serious or if it is just talk for now

If the Phillies would have had Haladay in their line up for the post season of 09, we wouldn't be talking about the New York Yankees being the World champs.
If they get him on their staff for 2010, watch out american league in the WS. Him and Lee together? Holy Sh!t!

The Blue Jays are dumb. They should package Halladay with Wells. Get rid of Wells' bad package. It is like the Marlins telling Red Sox, you want Josh Beckett, you will have to take Mike Lowell too.

    Good morning! davfied
You are right on! The Yanks might trade Chamberlain, with some other young talent for Halladay. AJ and Halladay go way back. Are the Yanks going to resign Petite? He didn't look bad in the Series?

    nguyen,
You are right! Its a perfect opportunity to unload Wells, along with a bunch of other overpaid nonperformers, in a trade for Halladay. You have more sense than most of our MLB execs!

    Hooter,
From everything I have read and heard all indications are that Andy will come back. Not a bad rotation. Sabathia, Halladay, Burnett, Pettitte & Gaudin???? I like Gaudin he has good & bad outings. His slider, when on, is nasty. He gets a lot of K's.

You guys are all gullible idiots. This article is planted, so the Phillies have more leverage over Pedro Martinez and his decisions. The Phillies have absolutely NO interest in trading for Roy Halladay. Sorry.

I wouldn't mind seeing them trade Hamels for Halladay. That guy is a headcase. It doesn't look like he's interested in playing baseball anymore. He's pulling an Allen Iverson. Phils have enough to make this happen.

arthurshaub, that'd be a great rotation but don't count on having Halladay and Happ. If Halladay gets moved to Philly, Happ will almost certainly be a part of the deal.

davfied - Not sure where you get that Halladay and Burnett were great friends. Halladay has gone on record saying how he thinks Burnett is immature. They were teammates, yes, but I'm not sure about friends. Where did you hear they were friends or were you assuming that?

He will go to the Yankees because of his life long dream to be the righthanded Whitey Ford. His wife likes the shopping in NY so that is where she wants him to play. The fact that the Yankees have the ability to over pay him has nothing to do with it. He can claim Yankee pride and the love of pinstripes. We keep hearing from the Yankee fans how stocked their minor league system is so it should be no problem trading 3 or 4 top notch prospects. Throw in a major league level outfielder. Then they can sign Lackey, Figgie, and wheel and deal Mauer away from the Twins. They could try to deal on Cliff Lee but most of the yankee fans seem to think Pettitte has a few more years left in the tank. After listening to what most of the Yankee fans want, I see the Yankee having the first 6 or 7 man rotation in baseball.
