Phillies have interest in Matt Holliday

The Philadelphia Phillies still have interest in 28-year-old Matt Holliday, and for good reason. He is a righthanded power hitter who would fit nicely in the middle of the Phils' lineup especially if they let Pat Burrell walk. And he plays left field.

SI.com reported Thursday that the Phillies were one of the teams aggressively pursuing Holliday, but one baseball source said the Rockies likely would require Shane Victorino or Jayson Werth plus at least a couple of top prospects — start with righthander Carlos Carrasco and work down — to get serious. For those reasons, a deal might not make sense for the Phillies.

Would they want to ship a big-league talent such as Victorino or Werth plus top prospects for a player who would be with the club for just one season? Holliday would be a free agent after the season, and his agent is Scott Boras. Boras almost always makes his players test the free-agent market, so there would be little to no chance that the Phillies could extend Holliday past 2009.

If Holliday can't be had at a reasonable price, the Phillies might have to look at Milton Bradley or Rocco Baldelli.

No way in hell would I trade Victorino for anyone in the league, he's prooven how valuable he is even with a few boneheqad mental mistakes in the regular season. Nor would I bring Milton Bradley into this locker room, he would be the next TO in this town.

This is the trade that has to happen for the NYY. With one yr left on his contract Cash probably won't do the trade! He will wait until next year to pay for him. Bad move b/c it will be his breakout year b/c he wants to get pay so why not get him and see what kind of breakout it will be. Common already Cash...you crewed up the Peavy deal lets make this one happen already!

No way, under ANY circumstances EVER, do you trade Victorino or Werth, plus top prospects for a client of Satan.. er, Boras... in the last year of a contract.
I'm nervous already about the loss of Gillick.

I have no problem with Milton Bradley whatsoever. Go out and get him. Even with all his past troubles, his teammates (with Oakland and Texas) have always loved him, and he'd actually be an upgrade over Burrell that you can get relatively cheap.

No Milton Bradley. He is an idiot and would ruin the chemistry on the Phillies. I hope no one offers Manny R a long term deal. I hope the Dodgers deal is the best offered and Scott Boras gets fired!

The other players and charlie wouldnt let bradley desroy the chemistry. They would let him know from the door, this is what we want to do,and this is what u do.I think being on a contender team might calm him down, and he realizes he can be a would series champion

bradley is a fantastic player. why trade half the team for holliday when you can get bradley as a free agent. there are a ton of outfielders on the market, i don't see why we have to trade for this guy.

i think bradley would love playing in the same outfield as victorino. they are both gritty tough players who'll do whatever it takes to win.

c'mon now...Shayne is a good ball player but he is nowhere near the baseball player of a Matt Holliday!!!!! Look at it from a broader point of view...Holliday is a far superior player...He crushed us in the playoffs two years ago!!!! us philly fans have to take our red glasses off and look at the bigger picture...Holliday makes us instant contenders again!!!!

beersy - We're already instant contenders.
You'd be giving up a gold-glove center fielder who was incredibly clutch in the playoffs for a one-year-rental. If you make that trade, who plays center?

This is a ridiculous rumor. The Phillies have no interest in Holliday for what they would want in return to have a guy for one year. And no way they go after Baldelli. You don't know if the guy can play 20 games the rest of his career. Let Burrell go and sign Bradley. Only problem there is last year he played 126 games - 2nd most in his career. He has averaged 91 games a season in his career. That slack would have to be picked up by Jenkins and Golson.

the reporter is that broke this story needs an intervention! the chemicals in his bloodstream are affecting his ability to type.....i think he meant to write...."Here are a few trade scenarios that should NEVER happen!" I hope "Pat the bat" is back in '09, but if not, we will be fine with an outfield consisting of victorino, werth, and dobbs or bruntlett or golston. Besides...I just started eating spam!
