The Philadelphia Phillies have two of their big hitters, Chase Utley(notes) and Shane Victorino(notes), on the disabled list and thought another was headed there when Ryan Howard(notes) went down in a heap on second base in the first inning during the 6-4 win over the Washington Nationals on Sunday.
According to the Philadelphia Daily News, Howard sprained his left ankle and will only miss a few days, so he won't be joining Utley and Victorino on the DL anytime soon.
"I'm hoping not," Howard told the paper. "I guess once the swelling goes down we'll see what happens. It's just kind of a bad sprain. I just rolled it pretty bad."
Manager Charlie Manuel told the Daily News that Howard will likely be off Tuesday and Wednesday when the team takes on the Florida Marlins but that he could see playing time Tuesday if everything worked out. "It's going to be a short period," Manuel said.
They better hope it is; after all, the Phillies are only 2.5 games behind the Atlanta Braves in the National League East and 3.5 games back in the wild-card race.
