Cincinnati Reds manager Dusty Baker has been happy with the way center fielder Corey Patterson has played the Cincinnati Enquirer reported.

"For a guy who came in late, he looks good," Baker said. "He's worked on things. He's always been a very good outfielder, good arm, probably one of the fastest guys in baseball."

At 28, Patterson looks like he may start to live up to his big billing as a prospect. "He's doing things now that you would have hoped he did earlier," Baker said. "For him, it was on-the-job training in the big leagues."

It is time for Reds fans to get behind this guy. I know we all want Bruce in CF, but it isn't going to happen right now, so we need to get behind Corey. Remember at one point in time Corey was thought to have game changing potential, if he can just get on base like he has this spring, he could be successful and might be the biggest key to our offense. In the worst case scenerio he falters and we look to Bruce again.

Reds fans should get ready for a big year out of him. Any worries about the outfield's range should be dispelled by this kid's speed. Change 'potential' to 'prowess' when it comes to talking about his bat, as well. If you have him in a fantasy league, you will be rewarded with steals, hits, and hopefully a lot more.

i drool as a reds fan patterson's potential. also lets look at hopper he is just as or even faster and has proven he can hit for average in mlb. bunt hit leader in a parttime role last year wow!!! we are deep at cf and of dunn's days are numbered. put up adam or the reds will send you packing. it takes more then hr for you to stay. try defense who cares if you hit 40 hr's ? especially if we have to suffer from your defense of giving up 100 runs .........liability lol

he goes crazy on the basepaths. if he can get his obp up and his strikeouts down, he could be one of the best and underrated signings of the year. good pickup red fans, low risk high reward is key

who is this idot that keeps on banbing on Dunn? Show me another player who will put up his numbers every year. His defense is not that bad. Only an idot would say he gives up a hundred runs every year.

We need Patterson to live up to his potential the way Ron Gant, Juan Encarnacion, Greg Vaugn, and Josh Hamilton did after playing for the Reds. Bruce will replace Dunn in LF after the July 31 trade deadline.

The Reds have a problem. 6 outfielders and 3 positions. Now if they can trade Adam Dunn and convince Junior Griffey to retire they will have one of the best young outfields in the majors. If the pitching can hold up for the entire year the Reds will contend for the Central Division pennant. After all, when was the last time the Cubs put together 2 good seasons? 1906-1907-1908, that's when.

Bill H, some Reds fan. No man gives up a hundred runs by making mistakes and holds on to a major league job. It would be an accurate statement to say that all of these people who belly ache about Dunn's strikeouts could do NO better. And as far as Dunn's days being numbered? Didn't Castellini say he wants to keep him???

#10 Says Bruce will replace Dunn after the July 31 trade deadline. Does that mean then that you are giving up on the season before it begins?

griffey won't retire #13, he's the healthiest he has been in a while, and he is still chasing a lot of spectacular milestones. the guy is my favorite player of the 90s, its a shame he got hurt, he wouldve shattered every homerun record. anyway, if the reds want to move on and rebuild, they can trade him to an AL team who needs a dh, he is more valuable as a dh because you figure he wont get hurt. dunn is worth keeping in my mind. i don't know how much is left on his contract but if you let Jr and dunn go, where is the power? just brandon phillips? i think the reds should let one of the big salary older outfielders go in a trade for some youth, save some money, make a bid for cc sabathia next year. harang and sabathia is a nasty 1 2 punch, homer bailey will be number 3. they can make it work offensively with the young speedy outfield, brandon phillips, joey votto, and then keep one of the big power guys. the reds don't look terrible anymore. i'd watchout in the next few years if they make the right moves.

too bad Corey can't steal first. his OBP is barely 300, not a leadoff guy who can set the table on a consistent basis. freel is a better clubhouse guy and gets on base at a 380 clip.

I think Baker will kill the REDS like he did the Cubs. The Reds are a threat to the Cubs and Brewers, but Baker will screw it up. Patterson will be .250 hitter, 25 SB... No point.

yea im a cubs fan, we thought that patterson was going to be a game changer, like wood and prior. But im sure you know the stories behind all three of them. He played in Baltimore before they finally got smart and got rid of him. Corey patterson is fast, thats all he is. And to tell you the truth the Reds arnt going to do much this year, we all know the cubs are going to easily win the division.

#15, I surely am. We approach yet another season poorly prepared and no improvements at pictcher or catcher. Even LoDuca's old legs are better than Ross/Valentin. Pitching? How long until the Reds realize that Arroyo cannot hold down the #2 slot? They'll torch the young pitching as always and sit on Dunn until it's too late to make a big trade to push for the playoffs. Believe it or not, Dunn can be traded for an impact pitcher and infielder. Plus, why are they not after John Patterson? Reds are still the Reds, season's over already.

exactly. not only that but they dont have any decent pitchers at the 4 or 5 spot. Fogg is ok, but he should probably be the 4th starter.

Cubs fans have a unique perspective in one way, they've seen all of this before. Patterson's real potential lies in his bat. His fielding and throwing arm have always been solid along with his speed, but the big problem has been his inability to lay off the high heat in the past. In Chicago, he was hot on anything inside and would normally crush pitches that nearly hit him. So, the real question is whether or not he has improved his batting significantly enough to start being selective at the plate.

Scott G, youre right, your team probably isnt going anywhere this year. that being said, your team is loaded with young talent. hopper, votto, bailey, phillips, keppinger, encarnacion. if i were GM...reds 2009: 1b-votto 2b-phillips 3b-encarnacion,ss-keppinger, lf- dunn, cf- jay bruce, rf hopper. then you have patterson, off the bench as the 4th outfielder. you trade griffey and his salary to an AL preferrably (to elongate Jr.'s career because he's the man) team who has a young defensive catcher who calls a good game who will be your franchise catcher. then with all the money you save, you make a big splash in pitching FA going after sabathia. imagine Sabathia, Harang, Arroyo, and Bailey as your top 4. then your team's offense and defense is young and fast. and your pitching is young and good

It would be nice if he works out, the reds have away of redeeming projects.Since Krivski has been here hes made some huge signs like Josh Hamilton, Brandon Phillips, Alex gonzalez and definetly Cordero. The problem is it looks like bruce is ready and we need him. I'd give him a few weeks but after that id pull the plug, but know this they both deserve time with hopper over freel!Go Reds!

#16....why would CC waste his time signing with a losing franchise when he can get paid caploads of more money by teams like the Yankees,Mets, Angels, Red Sox, need I go on....He'll stay in the AL and win titles instead of waste his time with the Reds.

some people its not all about winning, if you they overpay i dont think it would be a bad career move. put yourself in his shoes, he's been on a good team in cleveland but he never won with them. if he gets paid a boat load (santana money) to go to the NL where its easier to pitch, he can live in the same state as he did before so he doesnt have to uproot everyone surrounding him. also, if they go to the playoffs, this guy is a hero. so i wouldnt mind doing that. i'm not saying its likely to happen because i dont think they will pay enough but do you see my point?

The trick is simple. Just leave Baltimore and then become successful. It happens all the time. Everyone stinks in Baltimore. They underachieve and then move on to success.

Patterson has great range defensively and is dangerous when he gets on base. However, unless he dramatically improves his swing and approach from the plate. He will disappoint like he did with the cubs and orioles.

i am a cubs fan and i watched corey patterson play. he looked good then he got hurt and fell in love with the hr. i think he can hit 280 to 300 and steal 30 bases. i wish he would be doing that for the cubs. now we have the next 5 tool prospect pie and i am guessing the same trajectory one good year, over the top expectation then flop and shipped out.

Patterson is a stopgag until Bruce sees a little more AAA pitching. We're not depending on this guy to save the franchise, so quit talking like we are. Actually cubs fans, you can just quit talking, we've heard it all before. Or write half a page telling us how great wrigley is-win something.

Dunn has a no trade clause. The reds will not trade him unless it is tooa team he likes, and being the reds, they will trade him for damaged or overhyped prospects that will never help the reds. Trade hamilton for a pitcher who has no track record and is prone to big innings and then hire Patterson? the reds have already given up on this season. The only thing the reds did right was sign a real closer. Still not enough starting pitching to even be competitive.
