John Lackey(notes) is among the pitchers who have brought about some bad PR for the Boston Red Sox since the team's season abruptly ended without a playoff spot. Lackey, Jon Lester(notes) and Josh Beckett(notes) have caught a lot of heat for drinking beer during games in the team's clubhouse.
It appears the Red Sox have a place they could send Lackey if they wanted to make a change. According to the San Diego Union-Tribune, the San Diego Padres have had internal discussions about trying to land Lackey, but only if Boston agrees to eat most of Lackey's contract. Lackey is two seasons in on a five-year, $82.5 million deal.
Padres manager Bud Black and Lackey are old pals, of course. The pair knows each other from their days with the Los Angeles Angels when Black was the pitching coach.
The 32-year-old Lackey went 12-12 with a 6.41 ERA for Boston this season.
