MLB - Sports Rumors

As spring training approaches, the Baltimore Orioles and Brian Roberts have moved no closer to a contract extension, but the second baseman's agent believes there is still a chance.

"We certainly haven't made any progress recently, but neither side has closed the door," said Roberts' agent, Mark Pieper.

Although neither Pieper nor the club will comment on specifics, an industry source said the Orioles have offered a multiyear deal worth about $10 million per season but that the sides are still significantly apart in terms of both years and money.

Roberts, 31, has been with the Orioles his entire career, but he can become a free agent at the end of 2009. He has said repeatedly he does not want negotiations to be an in-season distraction, meaning the next few weeks could be monumental for Roberts, who also is getting married this month.

Pieper suggested that negotiations would probably be terminated "somewhere in the middle" between the start of spring training in mid-February and Opening Day on April 6 if an agreement can't be reached.

Orioles president Andy MacPhail would not address the Roberts situation, except to say, "We don't find it advantageous to discuss our negotiations in the media."

If the Orioles cannot re-sign Roberts, there is an increasing likelihood they would deal the speedy leadoff hitter. Despite rumors to the contrary, MacPhail said he has not had any trade talks involving Roberts for at least a month

Does anyone know how many years he wants? I like Roberts and he produces, but his value is OBP, speed on the basepaths and D. A 6 or 7 year deal puts him at 37 or 38, an age where his speed (and real value to the team) is sure to diminish.

I wouldn't blame BRob for walking. The direction of this club is mind-bloggling. First McPhail goes out and acquires a stable of young pitchers. Plugs a hole or two here and there. Great. Things are starting to look up, right? But then, he takes a 90 degree turn and signs Mark Hendrickson??? Mark (freakin') Hendrickson??? A Jon Garland innings eater is sitting there for reasonable money; Adam Dunn who'd sky shots outta Camden Yards awaits a destination, and McPhail sits on his hands. I get it, this team ain't gonna compete for at least two more years, but geez...us, at least make the club fun to watch, Andy. A second thought, no, I don't get it.

Good one stewie, LoL. Roberts will be able to go any where he wants after this yr. Why would he sign an extension if he doesn't believe the Orioles are trying to win. More than likely, he'll be a guy that gets traded at the deadline.

Yet another example of bad ownership. The Orioles could have flipped him for some good established young players if Angelos hadn't been so greedy in trade talks. Now he walks and all they get are the draft picks. Or, more likely, Angelos forces the GM to overpay for his pet player.

once he gets married it is all over...(and my wife will stop wearing his tshirt)
I like roberts - he is a good all around player. He is getting old though. I will miss hearing Biggie Smalls when he comes up to bat but ...Roberts deserves a chance to be with a team with a winning record and maybe winning some playoffs games
that won't happen in baltimore until angelos "accidentally" steps in front of a speeding cab.
