O's deal for Thames doubtful

A three-way deal that would have landed the Baltimore Orioles a new starter in left field, the Detroit Tigers' Marcus Thames, hit stumbling blocks last night and might not be revived.

According to two industry sources, the proposed deal had Orioles' pitcher Rodrigo Lopez headed to the Houston Astros while Astros' outfielder Luke Scott would have gone to Detroit.

The Orioles are also considering free-agent Jay Payton.

i agree that we dont need another outfielder, but i think thames is a dh and not a functional fielder, i wish that we could have got scott. yes we are a championship contending team, there are a lot of them though, if pitching stays healthy look out for the tigers again in 07'. one thing that scared me was when they were looked at as the favorite they folded, so somehow they need to overcome some pressure and step it up.

I think Luke Scott would have been an upgrade from Marcus Thames. I like Thames, but he strikes out way too much. Scott may have been a LEGITIMATE leadoff hitter and another left handed batter with some power. That is something that the Tigers need. Pudge, Maggs and Sheff will supply power from the right side...but, there is not enough serious left handed power threat. Casey is a good average hitter...with a little pop. Another high average hitter with moderate power would be welcome.

How about a package of Thames and Inge for Tejada who would become the Tigers new third baseman?!

yes the Tigers are good. but they need more left handed batters in the line up .that was the teams short fall this season.and a main reson for not winning the world searies

The tigers need luke scott, thames strikes out too often and doesn't walk nearly as much.Thames is a major source for power but it doesn't come when it counts, his average with runners is scoring position is terrible. Thames is no solid outfielder he is more of a dh and scott with limited power but hits for a high average and has a solid on base number is a better fit for the spacious comerica park.DD please find a way to get Luke

Why wouldnt the O's just skip the Thames part and trade Lopez for Scott who is light years better than Thames? Houston would be getting hosed in this trade, no way this is for real.

I'd take Scott, he has more walks than most of our Tigers and did not play the whole year! He has some power too. Wouldn't mind trying to find a way to get Tejada either.

Trading Lopez is a start - get young talent. Thames is not what the O's need. Scott is a #2 hitter at best with devloping power but not true protection.
We need Peter Angelos to sell the team or else the O's will continue to flounder.
And I do believe it is time to trade Tejada for multiple young high-upside pieces.

I like that Thames and Inge for Tejada idea. Inge makes the out of this world play with no one on base then skies routine balls to right field regularly with base runners on..............
