No pressure on Hendry to keep dealing

If the Chicago Cubs have another area of need to address this month before the non-waiver trade deadline, they're still looking for it.

''You never get out of the mind-set that you might still try to do some things that make you better, but you also don't want to be in the mode of, 'We've got to keep adding guys,''' general manager Jim Hendry said Wednesday. ''Let's not forget we've got seven guys in the All-Star Game and we just added a high-end starter. And guys that aren't going to the All-Star Game have done a real good job here.''

The Cubs seem more likely to move some of their pitching depth, such as Jason Marquis, if they do anything at all.

''You don't put yourself on the spot right now that, 'Hey, we might need this, we might need that,''' Hendry said. ''You see how it plays out internally first. Obviously there's going to be some numbers [issues] with people that might have to go down, with a little excess now of pitchers that we'll have to sort out by the end of the break.''

Manager Lou Piniella said the Cubs might stick with 13 pitchers until Alfonso Soriano (broken left hand) returns from the disabled list, possibly July 21 at Arizona.

I thought the same thing and a buddy pointed out the Mavs of the last couple years...Cuban has laid off spending on good players considerably.
Still, He'd be interested in his new toy for awhile and we could have a couple good years.
The Oliver Stone vein in me still says the whole thing is fixed. I called for this surge 4 years ago in the depths of the Crusty Baylor era.
Still, I'd love for IT to happen.

I would think that there could be some interest in Marquis if the Cubs pick up some of his salary. There should also be a lot of interest in Wuertz. I wouldn't mind them packaging them up together for an extra bat off the bench, or prospect. One way or the other, the Cubs needs to get and keep Hoffpauir back on the roster!

Who do you think would be interested in Marquis? He's a pitcher who's never lived up to his name and there are better options out there for teams looking.

Marquis should appeal to some pitching poor team like the Rangers; he can eat innings and is a better than average 4th/5th starter. He will be a cancer in the clubhouse though when he is out of the rotation so he must go for a bat. The Cubs could still use a lefty power hitter or a versatile middle infielder that could play SS so Cedeno can be moved for Burnett of Toronto. Toronto wants SS for Burnett and he'd look great as the 5th starter. Wolf of the Padres could be an interesting option for a 5th starter too as he is a lefty and the Cubs seem to want to lefties in the rotation. I would still consider signing Bonds too as you give up no prospects and he'll be cheap like Edmonds. Let Bonds play 4 days a week and Edmonds 3 days a week and they will both produce. Bonds would be great protection between Lee and A-Ram. Go Cubs; this is our year!

Well the Cubs have something special brewing in the northside. If they don't win it this year I may actually believe in curses. I still think that the Red Sox and White Sox have a better team, just my opinion.

Bonds clearly has stated he wants an everyday batting role like a DH/OF with an AL team in the hunt.

Andy B, I was right with you until you said Bonds. We do not need that distraction. He would bring in pure venom and destroy the team moral.

Marquis is streaky, but when he's on he is nasty. Everyone talks about trading him for a good bat, but this is the National League, that extra bat isnt going to help with no DH. Marquis is the second best hitting pitcher on the staff. His bat makes up for his inconsistency 90% of the time. Keep him. He's a better 5th starter than Marshall is, and Marquis can hit!

Bonds is also looking for a 3-4 year commitment. This is why a few teams have passed on Bonds thus far. Cubs can't commit to a long term offer on Bonds and or Edmonds. One year affair of bust for most team looking to flirt with Barrymania Bonds. The Twins should bite. Maybe even Texas. Teams that can make a run and need a full time DH.

Addressed to #11 what moral Bonds was nasty to reporters and punched J. Kent in the eye, how does 758 homers translate to pure venome? I don't think Barry want's to come the Cubs anyways. He want's to play in a small market, staying away from you.

No Bonds please. I have to ask Ed, why did you put an apostrophe on want? (want's)
And i'd trade Marquis for a water cooler to replace the one Big Z destroyed.

Maybe this is a stretch, but I know Jason Bay is on the trading block. What if we moved DeRosa to right field, Fukudome to center, Soriano back to original position at second base and Bay in left field. If we have the peices I like this idea.
    Soriano-2nd
    Fukudome-center
    D Lee-1st
    A Ram-3rd
    J Bay-LF
    Soto-C
    DeRosa-RF
Theriot-SS Looks like an unstoppable lineup to me. All of this hinges on whether or not we have the peices to get Bay in a trade.

There's absolutely no way the Cubs want Barry Bonds! First, I don't want him touching the outfield! And to Andy, when you say you'd have Bonds play 4 days and Edmonds the other 3, that means you'd have Bonds playing centerfield!! Wow! Either that or you'd take Fukudome out of the lineup to put Bonds in left and have Fukudome play center?? Besides the fact that Bonds hasn't swung a bat since last year, why would you want him? just for homeruns? Absolutely not worth taking a roster spot away from someone else to give it to Bonds. The Cubs should trade Marquis for whatever they can get...does everyone remember his numbers from the second half last year?! Try to make a trade for either Maddux or Burnett as the fifth starter and put Marshall in the pen.

Do you really think the Pirates would deal J Bay into the division? We're still scarred from Jon Leiber for Brant Brown and Bobby Hill for Aramis. We ain't going to take Ronny Cedeno or Felix Pie.

I think you can forget about the Cubs going after Burnett now. Those rumors were out there before the Cubs made the Harden/Gaudin trade. They have plenty of options for a 5th starter including Gaudin who I think will get the job before the season ends. Besides with the injury risk of Harden why would the Cubs deal another set of prospects for a pitcher with an injury history of his own and a 5.23ERA? Let St.Louis or Philly overspend for that guy.
Some of the previous posters mentioning Bonds and Bay I don't see how you think this can possibly improve the team. I won't even go into Bonds that one is obvious. 1908 your lineup with Bay is very nice but what about defense ? You are sacrificing defense at every position by putting Bay into the lineup.

matt holliday. the rockies can't afford him and we have the depth to get him.(not to mention the cash to pay him.) ill take a 30 home run and 100 rbi man anyday. soriano in left, fukudome in center, and holliday in right. the outfield in the northside is already a crowded area, so why not unload uneccessary pieces and finally complete the ultimate puzzle that has eluded the cubbies for the last, um 100years? not only would this deal make the cubs an all-around better team, it would allow a guy like jim edmonds come in to relieve fukudome whenever needed thus making him more effective and more consistant.
