The Washington Nationals offered Lastings Milledge(notes) to the Pittsburgh Pirates for Nyjer Morgan(notes) is a straight-up swap of outfielders, according to Piratesreport.com.

According to the report, Pittsburgh GM Neal Huntington apparently wants Nationals acting GM Mike Rizzo to add a second player before he would consider making the trade.

Morgan offers great speed and defense. Milledge offers potentially outstanding power, something the Pirates has in short supply both the major leagues and minors, and good speed. Morgan turns 29 on Thursday. Though he has improved greatly since first coming to the major leagues late in the 2007 season, he is almost assuredly at his peak now.

Milledge, meanwhile, is 24 and seemingly has quite a bit of upside despite spending part of the last four seasons in the major leagues.

Sounds like a win-win trade for both bottom feeders, looking to improve on the long run. I don't think Pirate fans would be happy about losing, yet, another good player in trade.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure McCutcheon will go nowhere... there's a reason this trade is for Morgan, everyone knows McCutcheon is untouchable. Danny D, you must not fall under the "everyone" category.

Bad deal for the Nats. They don't need an additional outfielder who isn't in their long term plans, especially having to give up an additional pitcher . . . unless it's Hanrahan. Milledge should play some more to boost his trade value. 24 year old with potential is still more valuable than 29 year old short term solution on a team going nowhere fast.

Yeah Danny, the Nats need a Catcher too and a nice rotation pitcher. Should they throw in Maholm and Doumit for a couple of low A pitching "prospects" and maybe a couple helpings of crab cakes?

L-Millz has a better chance of being the rap mogul he so wants to be than a decent major league ballplayer at this point. Pirates would be idiots to do this deal but the way Pirate management has so f**ked up a once proud organization, they'll probably throw in both Duke and Maholm too for L-Millz.

I don't want to see this trade happen just cause morgan and mccutchen are really good friends. It might mess with mccutchens head a little if they traded morgan. I think that has a little to do with his early sucess.Plus I am sick of seeeing players leave pittsburgh when they show just a little up side.

Huntington also wants a pitcher...can't remember his name at the moment. He is one of the Nats best pitchers so that is the sticking point.

Perhaps 9 cumsocks would get the Pirates a winning season as opposed to their current roster. Danny D might be on to something.

If you think nyger morgan is the pirates best player you are sadly mistaken. Its freddy sanchez. And that poor guy needs to be traded in the worst way. He is someone who could really help a team out instead of being stuck in that craphole lineup.

Nobody wants millage ... head case ... bad teammate ... minor leaguer ... the pirates need morgantown in spacious left field ... and two speed demons setting the table ... talent is coming!

I think it's a good trade for both teams but an even better trade for the two players. Milledge gets a better look in Pittsburgh and Nyjer gets a better opportunity to become a true everyday player with the nat's...It fits

Morgan and McCutchen are like Maury Wills and Matty Alou - both were sets of speedsters. If only Russel would use them as such! My hope: TRADE GMs! The Pirates need to get rid of Huntington ASAP before he destroys this franchise. Anybody remember his trades for Jason Bay or Xavier Nady? Pitiful!!!!!

Danny D, your the biggest idiot in the world to consider saying this. They trade McLouth for 3 guys that could be decent, to make room for McCutchen.....yeah. Your smart. Just because the computer makes those type of trades in MLB the show 09 doesn't mean the real gms will make the trade. Then again, why do you care about baseball if your a Nationals fan? lmao

Football Fan......maybe you didn't notice but Xavier Nady's career may be over. Not a bad trade in hindsight considering he's toast. Jason Bay on the other hand has just been tearing it up. It's easier to do that when you have good batters protecting you in the order. CUMSOCKS!

I just now feel for Lastings Milledge, sure he's going to a team that is slightly better then the Nationals, but he'll have to play in that cesspool known as $hitsburgh, with no nightlife, fat & ugly women, and nasty smell.

Football Fan isn't paying attention to reality.
The Pirates had no intentions of keeping Bay or Nady longer than 2010 before they lost them (Bay would be too expensive, Nady wouldn't be worth what he asked for). And they weren't going to be a contender by 2010.
So they traded them, and in return they got:
    - Andy Laroche, current starting 3B
    - Ross Ohlendorf, current #3 SP in rotation
    - Jose Tabata, 5-tool stud who's a BIG risk but has potential upside similar to Bay
    - Brandon Moss, young RF with upside similar to Nady
    - Jeff Karstens, #6 SP in rotation (spot-starter/long reliever, potential future #3 SP)
    - Dan McCutchen, a minor-league lefty reliever
    - Craig Hansen, a decent reliever with MLB experience and some trade value
Oh yeah... and they saved a bunch of money IN ADDITION to all that.
I'm sure the Pirates would have made the NLCS before losing Bay, right? And Nady wasn't worth NEARLY what the Yankees gave up for him (especially if Tabata is for real).
    AS FOR THIS DEAL...
As the article said... Nyjer Morgan is 29. This is it. This is the absolute best he's probably going to be. And right now, he's a 4th defense/speed OF at best on most teams.
The Nationals want him because he's versatile, and can play CF if needed. But he's got no upside... AT ALL. Milledge at least has the potential to get better... and the Pirates need potential a LOT more than they need a speedy, no-power 4th OF right now.
