The Washington Nationals offered Lastings Milledge(notes) to the Pittsburgh Pirates for Nyjer Morgan(notes) is a straight-up swap of outfielders, according to Piratesreport.com.
According to the report, Pittsburgh GM Neal Huntington apparently wants Nationals acting GM Mike Rizzo to add a second player before he would consider making the trade.
Morgan offers great speed and defense. Milledge offers potentially outstanding power, something the Pirates has in short supply both the major leagues and minors, and good speed. Morgan turns 29 on Thursday. Though he has improved greatly since first coming to the major leagues late in the 2007 season, he is almost assuredly at his peak now.
Milledge, meanwhile, is 24 and seemingly has quite a bit of upside despite spending part of the last four seasons in the major leagues.

The Pirates had no intentions of keeping Bay or Nady longer than 2010 before they lost them (Bay would be too expensive, Nady wouldn't be worth what he asked for). And they weren't going to be a contender by 2010.
So they traded them, and in return they got:
- Andy Laroche, current starting 3B
- Ross Ohlendorf, current #3 SP in rotation
- Jose Tabata, 5-tool stud who's a BIG risk but has potential upside similar to Bay
- Brandon Moss, young RF with upside similar to Nady
- Jeff Karstens, #6 SP in rotation (spot-starter/long reliever, potential future #3 SP)
- Dan McCutchen, a minor-league lefty reliever
- Craig Hansen, a decent reliever with MLB experience and some trade value
Oh yeah... and they saved a bunch of money IN ADDITION to all that.
I'm sure the Pirates would have made the NLCS before losing Bay, right? And Nady wasn't worth NEARLY what the Yankees gave up for him (especially if Tabata is for real).
AS FOR THIS DEAL...
As the article said... Nyjer Morgan is 29. This is it. This is the absolute best he's probably going to be. And right now, he's a 4th defense/speed OF at best on most teams.
The Nationals want him because he's versatile, and can play CF if needed. But he's got no upside... AT ALL. Milledge at least has the potential to get better... and the Pirates need potential a LOT more than they need a speedy, no-power 4th OF right now.
Moo.
