Myers upset with the Phillies

“BrettWhen the season started, Brett Myers(notes) was the Opening Day starter and the highest-paid pitcher on the Philadelphia Phillies' roster. Heck, his $12 million salary was more than Chase Utley(notes) was getting. Now he's not on the roster for the National League Championship Series and he's upset about it, according to the Philadelphia Inquirer.

He had hip surgery back in early June and wasn't expected to return this season at all but he worked pretty hard to get back. Phillies fans were hoping his arrival would help solve the team's massive bullpen problems at the time. Instead, the 29-year-old had a 6.43 ERA in eight games. He followed that up with pitching 2/3s of an inning in the Colorado series and issuing two walks in the process.

Now it's not even clear if Myers will be back with the Phillies next year. Manager Charlie Manuel says he sees Myers as being in spring training right now. And unfortunately for him, the rest of the team is much further down the path right about now.

Brett Myers worked hard, but is not up to snuff. He wasn't expected back so soon. He tried but fell short. Good luck next year, Brett.

He was upset about being left off the NLCS roster? Really? That isn't the Brett Myers I know..He's usually a level headed Professional.....
Honestly? Is this really shocking to anyone?Did these journalists think he'd say "ho hum,no big deal,I worked extremely hard to get back to the roster and they'd rather have Eric Bruntlett to run."?

I understand his frustration. He worked incredibly hard to get back in time for the post-season. Having said that, it is a team game and the 25 guys best equipped to help the team win are on the post-season roster. End of story. From time to time, Brett seems to forget that baseball is a team game, and not all about him. I do not expect him to be back, and wonder where he ends up in FA.

Morning PPW - Sorry i never got back to you on the Rudy J situation. Word is he was wanting a raise but the sale of the Rangers limited their funds. I think he would be a canidate for Houston's managerial job for sure but word is the Cubs are going to be after him hard as their hitting coach after 10/31 when his contract expires.

I think it's a combo of how bad he was pitching since coming back from the surgery and the emergence of Pedro Martinez as a go to guy for the rotation. Bottom line, when healthy and has his stuff going for him, Pedro is a better pitching option than Myers, and if Myers can't come to terms with that and wants to cry in the corner like some spoiled brat instead of being a good teammate, that's his problem, and the Phils don't need b.s. drama queen stuff like this when they are trying to get back to the World Series. I bet he has a smile on his face when he cashes that big paycheck though.

Artist #6: Thanks. The article I read said the Rangers offered him a "small raise," but he's already the highest paid batting coach in baseball, so I think it is fair to say it probably didn't come down to just money. My guess, totally as an outsider, is he wants to manage, maybe thought he'd get his shot before Ron Washington was hired, and with Washington now firmly entrenched in Texas, and several managerial jobs open, this seemed like the time to make the leap. Just my $0.02.

PPW - no doubt he wants to move up. i just dont know if he has anyone to hook him up when there are other qualified coaches out there to fill spots over an inexperienced one. His best shot is Texas b/c of the 15 yrs of service but you are right Washington might stick there longer than i would have imagined. Pretty impressive that he might make 750k to 1 mil to be a batting coach next season. More money than some of the managers out there so its a win win for him to opt out now while the dremand for his services is high

Artist #9: I totally agree. Are you surprised that Manny Acta seems to be in demand? I sure am. I thought Acta had his team unprepared to play on an alarmingly frequent basis. I think he is as bad a MLB manager as I have ever seen.
I like Ron Washington a lot. He might get the nod for AL Manager of the Year. That could be a close vote, as Don Wakamatsu, Ron Gardenhire, Joe Girardi, and Mike Soscia all had great years.

I stand corrected. I forgot about Ned Yost. He did less with more. He's at least in Manny Acta's league.

Tough break for Brett. He worked so hard to get back. They could have put him on instead of Bruntlett and his .170 average, but the brass thought they needed another hitter (or pinch runner) instead of a pitcher. Hopefully he gets past this, re-signs, and can still contribute next year. Doubtful tho.
His whole ugly domestic incident aside (which I realize is a big incident), the guy has said and done all the right things for the organization over the years. I'd hate to see him leave the club on a sour note, but hearts are for your family. Brains and balls are for business and this is business.
