Here's news that should warm the hearts of New York Mets' fans this winter. Second baseman Luis Castillo, who was booed so unmercifully by Shea Stadium faithful that manager Jerry Manuel hesitated to use him, will most likely not be traded.

The gimpy Castillo, who was ailed by a number of injuries from spring training through the end of the season, is considered a bad contract.

"We expect him to come in healthy and to be the productive player he's been for a long time,'' said Mets general manager Omar Minaya.

give me a break. c'mon, omar, i know hes your boy. but he sucked. put murphy at second, juan rivera in left, sign k-rod, and sign derek lowe/john garland. there, successful offseason.
if you can manage, trade castillo, heilman, and schowenweis. that will remove a lot of agony that we would have to suffer.

hey ken, good to hear from, how are you? anyway, he's staying, you know omar is going to keep him, typical, aren't we used to it by now. let's see what he does with the bullpen and starting rotation. so far castillo is his first move, we're off to a great start

keep castillo, for what, your better off signing super joe mcewing to play there. But seriously get robinson Cano cause the yanks will trade him, get rid of heilman schoenweis, bring back stokes sign rodriguez and make a big splash in left. You know cliff floyd had more games played in the last two years than moisture alou. Playoffs 2006 cliff floyd helped bring us there but was released cause he was injury prone and they signed Alou instead. Omar have you lost your touch. Sign A J burnett. Derrick lowes old and are we trying to replace pedro with older. Santana ,Burnett ,Maine ,Perez resigned, or #4 and Neise. Bring back darren oliver and chad bradford to go with k rod and the bullpen should be tight.

"We expect him to come in healthy and be a productive player..." As in bat .300+. steal 30+ bases and score about 100 runs??? There must be some really good $%%^^ in NY to believe that.

The truth is they can't trade him. Nobody wants to pick up the Minaya Latino excise tax in his contract.
Minaya formula: avg salary + 15% additional to play in NY + 20% bonus for being Latino= Player Salary

Lets not forget that Omar got Santana for a cow and 3 magic beans. Granted he over values the Latin players and OLD veterans. He did lock up Wright and Reyes to below market contracts.

I'm not a fan of Omar, but I'd rather save money and get a great bullpin, a SOLID #2 pitcher or even another Ace if they're willing to spend the extra money and put Murphey in left. Castillo didn't hit last year, we all know that, but look at his On Base and compare it to Reyes', not much difference, the guy still gets on.

this guy was shot when we traded for him two years ago. Minaya needs to bring in some players who still have years left at peak levels .Orlando hudson should be playing second base for the mets next year. How about making a huge push for the phillies pat burrel to shore up left field .

It's just like where i work, the white guy gets left out for oppurtunties so if is legal there it must be leagl in baseball. Just once i would like to see WFAN talk about that, noway have to stay away from that one. You guys all know if it were possible Omar would have a complete Latino\Hispanic team. WFAN sucks, bring back RUSSO.

This is probably a good gamble. We have so many other needs that our money and prospects should be used for them. If Castilla can come in healthy, fit, and with a good attitude, he should be able to be able to contribute quite a bit to our team. We NEED a new Bullpen, and power in the outfield. I say take a chance on Castilla.

why do the mets nickel and dime everthing. they made a mistake with castillo. why carry someone who might no play 50 games. you got a new stadium, time to start anew get some pitching, cause good pitching beats good hitting 90 percent of the time.the people support the team , maybe its time for the team to give something back to the people

If us Mets fans are stuck with him I hope he can surprise everyone. I'm not going to complain about this yet, but if Castillo plugs 2nd base and then Minaya gets a high profile LF'er leaving Murphy without a job I'll be really pi$$ed. Murphy just got injured but he should be fine well before next season.
