Mets signing Mike Jacobs

Mike JacobsThe New York Mets are apparently very close to bringing first baseman Mike Jacobs(notes) back to where he started out his career, according to ESPN.

Jacobs, a lefty bat, is supposedly going to sign a minor-league deal with the team. He would basically get invited to spring training with no guarantee of a job into the season. After all, the 29-year-old struck out 132 times in 434 at-bats last year for the Kansas City Royals. He did have 19 homers, though.

Jacobs isn't known for his stellar glove and doesn't hit well against left-handers. Still, the Mets need some help and are going to go ahead and give the guy who debuted with them in 2005 a shot.
