“FernandoYoung New York Mets outfielder Fernando Martinez(notes) may be one of the team's top prospects but the team is apparently ready to put him up on the trading block, according to the New York Daily News.

The 21-year-old Martinez played only 29 games in his first season in the majors due to surgery on his right that he is still recovering from, hitting one homer and scoring 11 runs. But he got a lot of good publicity before then.

Now he's about to try and prove that he's healthy and worth trading for as he starts winter ball for Leones del Escogido of the Dominican Winter League. The Mets actually held him back from starting winter ball because it was supposedly having trade discussions about him.

Trade him for a young pro, fielding or hitting, not for some guy who's turning 33 during the season and is on the backside of his career.

great trade him after his wonderful showing this season smh...his value is a lot lower than last season, but I guess potential and the fact that he is still only 21 I think will outweigh that, him, Niese and someone else for DOC, and if not him another stud pitcher or a power bat...

Mets sure seem to be good at wanting to deal their prospects when their value is at its lowest....Milledge, C Gomez, Heilman, and F-Mart.

Who wouldn't want Alex Ochoa, er, I mean, Fernando Martinez? All he needed to do last year was raise his average 24 points and he would've cracked the Mendoza line!
The question is; who would they trade him for? Roy Halladay? Why do that if you can sign Lackey and not give up anyone? F-Mart needs an entire season in AAA. Just send him down and tell him up front to get comfortable and do your best, because you're spending the season in the minors. Then, provided he puts up some numbers, you either have a viable major league ready OFer (hopefully), a tradeable commodity, or just another hyped minor leaguer who didn't pan out.

@ justnty: lackey is not even close to the pitcher halladay is. he's not a even a legit ace. a johan santana-roy halladay rotation will be the best 1-2 punch since randy johnson and curt schilling.
btw fernando martinez is a joke. get rid of him asap before he becomes a fixture at triple-a 10 years from now.

Another can't miss Met prospect superstar. Hmmmmm, Billy Beane, Shawn Abner, Gregg Jeffries, Alex Ochoa, Lastings Milledge, etc. Trade him. I have no faith in the Met farm system.

If it's a trade for a top-of-the-rotation starter (i.e., Roy Halladay), then do it. F-Mart has consistently been ranked by Baseball America as one of the top 10 prospects in baseball, so it's not like only the Mets were making that assessment. If this kid is coveted by other teams (ya listening, Toronto?), we should definitely consider putting him in a package that will help us win.
However, if Omar trades him for anything less than Halladay, he will be, as usual, a Class A moron.
And for anyone who's down on F-Mart for not being the second coming of Albert Pujols, read Marty Noble's latest mailbag column on the Mets website.

Why is FMart's value lower this year than last? Cause he injured his toe and can't hit at the MLB level yet (he wasn't even playing every day...)? The guy was only 20 and hit for an .877 OPS at AAA in 176 at bats... I'd say his value went up.

Rattle; I read the Marty Noble thing. Thanks. He basically said the same thing that I did. In order to see what you have in F-Mart, he needs a full season in AAA.
Golden Eagle is probably right. Lackey is not the pitcher Halladay is. If they can get Halladay for F-Mart and two others (perhaps Maine or Pelfrey, and a minor leaguer), I'd make the trade. The problem is; they'd have to negotiate a new contract with Halladay. Are they willing to do that? We'll see. There is an awful lot of talk about them going the 2nd tier free agent route. Yes, that does make Wilpon a complete liar. But either way, that doesn't bode well for Met fans that even hold out a remote hope for a competitive (meaning any shot at a playoff berth) 2010 season.

If it's true that the mets will only spend 20M this off season then it's highly unlikely they are putting together a package that includes fmart for halladay/ i would guess it would include murphy and choose one (thole/ parnell/pagan or pelfrey) for either a gonzalez or crawford

Way to go, PPW. Did you see it go in?
I've never had one, but I've had a few lip outs, including two last year. My wife (who is a 25 on a good day) has 1, and had the ball halfway in the hole on two others. She has a beautiful wood, glass framed thing in our den with the ball and her score card. It mocks me daily!! :)

If the mets need to add 2 reliable SP/a corner OF and someone to play !B and have a budget of 20-25mil/then it's unrealistic to be signing big name free agents or trading for $$$ players/let's face it the wilpons have to fork over 50m from their madoff profits then they will not be big spenders this year. Figure out 4 or5 players they can get whose total salary will come to about 25M. i'd love to have figgins and halladay. but there goes your budget. Remember A gonzalez has 2 yrs left on his affordable contract

justnty #19: I did not see it go in. It was misting after several hours of on-again-off-again showers. I was the last person in our group to hit and the pin was all the way back. The hole is like a reverse redan hole. The ball landed about a third of the way back on the green which runs hard from front to back and breaks hard left to right. The ball bounced a couple of times and was rolling toward the cup, and then, because everyone started walking right after I hit all I could see was our caddies and playing partners jumping around with their arms up. I pretty much knew what happened at that point. When we got to the green, you could see the path the ball took in the moisture on the green. Sort of like putting early in the morning before the dew burns off the greens. It probably rolled between 35 and 40 feet before going in.
Part of the insurance is that the Club frames the flag, scorecard, ball in the same type of wood framed deal it sounds like your wife has hanging in your den. It was hard to play the rest of the day. I think I was 1-under for the day at that point and finished like +9 over the remaining 7 holes for an 80. There was a fair amount of drinking going on.
I've played alongside for other guys who've made holes in one. This was my first in 30 years of golf.

Great story, PPW. You know what? If you're not going to see it go in, seeing the 'moisture track' is the next best thing.
BTW; I love being the 2nd or 3rd group out in the morning. Putting is a lot easier when you have a line drawn right to the hole!
My wife had hers on the 13th hole. She then had a 6 on 14 thru 18.
Hole-in-ones are an incredible thing. There are two guys in the next office from mine. One is an 8, the other is a 20. The 20 has a wall full of aces (6 of them). The 8 has been playing for 50 years and has none. Secretly, I think he wants to beat the crap out of the 20. :)

I know! It's too bad they never traded Escobar in a huge deal. Oh, don't forget that really terrible guy, I think his name was David Wright. They should have traded him for Jose Cruz when they had the chance! I think there was another one actually. I think his name was Jose Reyes. Why was he always smiling so much, since he was so terrible?

I'd be surprized if they can get a GM to agree to trade a bag of balls and a batting glove. This guy is NOTHING but hype......ANOTHER Minaya disaster.......Gomez, Escobar, and Burgos.
Deny it if you wish, but the Twins are probably the best organization when it comes to locating, drafting, and developing young players.
So why don't the Mets bring-up talent like the Twins? Why don't the Mets make logical/wise trades like the Twins or Athletics or Tampa or Phillies?
ANSWER The front office has an IQ of 150.......divided by 3 of course, Moe, Larry, and Curly .....(Minaya being Moe-the SMART one).
