The New York Mets are considering Darren Eckstein as an option at second base. The New York Daily News reported Eckstein and New York officials dined in Connecticut Friday night.
The Daily News reported Eckstein, the 2006 World Series MVP at shortstop, apparently is looking for a contract like the four-year, $36 million deal Julio Lugo signed with the Red Sox last December. The contact is believed to be larger than the one Luis Castillo is looking for.
How serious the 32-year-old Eckstein is about playing second base remains unclear, but he was interested enough in the Mets to dine with Omar Minaya, Willie Randolph and other team executives in chief operating officer Jeff Wilpon's neighborhood.

James Loney plays a mean second base and is a much better hitter that Darren or David Eckstein.
