According to a FOXsports.com report posted late Wednesday evening, the New York Mets and New York Yankees "have emerged as the leading contenders" for free-agent pitcher Freddy Garcia.
Citing Major League sources, the report said that Garcia, a 33-year-old righty, has "pretty much narrowed it down" to the two teams, adding that two other teams might still be in the mix.
The White Sox and Rangers have been recently linked to Garcia, who is said to be looking for a guaranteed contract that would allow him to be paid in the event that he didn't make the team with which he signs.
Many baseball insiders have predicted that Garcia, a 10-year veteran who has a career record of 118-77 with a 4.07 ERA, will need to accept a Minor League contract that offers no such guarantees.
Garcia underwent right shoulder surgery in August 2007 and has pitched 73 innings over the past two seasons. He signed with the Tigers in August and made three starts for Detroit, going 1-1 with a 4.20 ERA.

I am a yankee fan and agree with all the moves they made this off season and money they've spent. But that statement right there is the epitomy of what's wrong with fully guaranteed contracts.

The Mets passed on Lowe. Whatever, let's move on. Now there is Ollie, Garland, Sheets and Wolf available. As of this second, the Mets have two definite starters, Santana and Pelfrey. Maine may or may not be ready to go on time. Redding has not been guaranteed a rotation spot. I can't believe the Mets are even considering Garcia. What, El Duque is busy?

That is why the Yankees won't sign him. I will bet you are a Yankee hater. Any truth to that?

What is funny in a dark way is some pitching starved team will give him a shot. Texas come to mind? Too bad. He was a pretty good pitcher. That goes to show people, that these guys earning power can go in the blink of an eye.
