MLB - Sports Rumors

According to a FOXsports.com report posted late Wednesday evening, the New York Mets and New York Yankees "have emerged as the leading contenders" for free-agent pitcher Freddy Garcia.

Citing Major League sources, the report said that Garcia, a 33-year-old righty, has "pretty much narrowed it down" to the two teams, adding that two other teams might still be in the mix.

The White Sox and Rangers have been recently linked to Garcia, who is said to be looking for a guaranteed contract that would allow him to be paid in the event that he didn't make the team with which he signs.

Many baseball insiders have predicted that Garcia, a 10-year veteran who has a career record of 118-77 with a 4.07 ERA, will need to accept a Minor League contract that offers no such guarantees.

Garcia underwent right shoulder surgery in August 2007 and has pitched 73 innings over the past two seasons. He signed with the Tigers in August and made three starts for Detroit, going 1-1 with a 4.20 ERA.

Yeah, I say no way he gets a guaranteed contract. He just suffered a biceps injury in winter league, so the guy is obviously injury prone. But I would say it is not a bad signing for any club if they get him on a minor league deal. Tons of upside if healthy. Dodgers should consider it, but he will go to the Mets.

I say let the Mets have him. I rather keep Pettite. At least he eats more innings.

"looking for a guaranteed contract that would allow him to be paid in the event that he didn't make the team with which he signs"
I am a yankee fan and agree with all the moves they made this off season and money they've spent. But that statement right there is the epitomy of what's wrong with fully guaranteed contracts.

For that kind of demand, the Yankees should have signed Pavano again. At least they would have gotten a bit of a "guilt discount" from Pavano

OK Cashman, now that you've signed Nady and Melky.trade them along with Kennedy for Jake Peavy. GET JAKE PEAVY. We need younger arms, that can help us for years to come. You can bring up a CF prospect from the farm system to compete against with Gardner. These moves would solidify our team.

JJ (#2); he suffered a bicep injury in winter ball? If that's true, I wouldn't go near him. I've said all along; Pedro is completely healthy for the first time in 2 1/2 years. I'd rather sign him to a 1 year contract for the league minimum and load it with incentives. Let him compete for the number 5 spot, or even as a 6th starter.
The Mets passed on Lowe. Whatever, let's move on. Now there is Ollie, Garland, Sheets and Wolf available. As of this second, the Mets have two definite starters, Santana and Pelfrey. Maine may or may not be ready to go on time. Redding has not been guaranteed a rotation spot. I can't believe the Mets are even considering Garcia. What, El Duque is busy?

I would love for the Yankees to give a guaranteed contract to Freddy and watch it blow up in their face, assuming he were to make the starting rotation. YEAH!

HA! Yeah, just what they need. ANOTHER question mark in their rotation to go along with Burnett, Wang, Hughes & Chamberlain.

It seems ,with his resume of a recent injury and long layoff, he should not be calling the shots. He ll be lucky if any team wants to take a look. A team would have to be pretty desperate to bow to his demands of a guaranteed contract. Seems like he pricing himself on what he did 3 years ago, instead of what he might be able to do now.

    Stewie,
What is funny in a dark way is some pitching starved team will give him a shot. Texas come to mind? Too bad. He was a pretty good pitcher. That goes to show people, that these guys earning power can go in the blink of an eye.
