When the Single-A Savannah Sand Gnats take on the Greensboro Grasshoppers in the South Atlantic League's championship series that kicks off Thursday, New York Mets ace Johan Santana(notes) won't be on the roster. Santana, who is recovering from shoulder surgery, didn't feel right about taking the mound in the championship round, Mets manager Terry Collins said, according to the New York Daily News.
Another team Santana won't be taking the mound for this year, the Daily News reports, is the Mets. Collins noted that the possibility of Santana pitching at all for the team this season has been "out the window for a while," the Daily News reports.
Santana will pitch a simulated game Sunday and then may pitch in the Instructional League. "It's unclear how much longer he'll pitch before resting it for the offseason," the Daily News reports.
"Johan's been throwing ever since spring training on a schedule of so many days a week," Collins said, according to the Daily News. "If we get him through this Instructional League program, it might be time to let him go rest so we can get ready for next February."
