Cameron Maybin was so good during his September call-up with the Florida Marlins that when April rolls around, there's little doubt he'll be trotted out with the Marlins' Opening Day starters. The fuzzier question is where he'll wind up in the order. Will he bat leadoff, as he did to sensational results when the Marlins called him up at the end of the season? Or will that role remain with Hanley Ramirez?
''That one's probably not decided yet,'' Marlins general manager Mike Hill said.
The Marlins on Wednesday continued to talk with other clubs about possible trades that could alter the look of the lineup. But with the general managers' meetings winding down, it's almost a given that Maybin will be the Marlins' starting center fielder after he spent nearly all of last season in the minors.
''I think everyone saw in September what he is capable of doing, and the excitement and the talent he brings to the ballpark every day,'' Hill said. ``That's what we traded for.''
The Marlins gave up Miguel Cabrera and Dontrelle Willis to reel in Maybin and five others from the Detroit Tigers last December.
Maybin dropped jaws with his end-of-season play — at the plate, in the field and on the base paths. He went 16 for 32, stole four bases and showed off his vast defensive range in center. He went 12 for 25 in the leadoff spot.
