MLB - Sports Rumors

“DonFour of the candidates that have been asked to go to the second round of interviews for the open managerial job with the Cleveland Indians have been identified, according to MLB.com.

The four lucky fellas are Manny Acta, Bobby Valentine, Torey Lovullo, and Don Mattingly. Former Washington Nationals manager Acta is supposedly the frontrunner. The Cleveland Plain Dealer points out that the 40-year-old would be an ideal choice if the team wants to appeal to the one third of its probable 25-man roster in 2010 that is Latino.

The 59-year-old Valentine is thought to likely be to expensive for the Indians since he made $4 million coaching in Japan last year. Current Los Angeles Dodgers hitting coach Don Mattingly may be too mellow. He's also supposedly being considered by the Washington Nationals, where Jim Riggleman would like to keep the job that he took over for Acta. And Indians Triple-A manager Lovullo has never coached in the majors and wouldn't represent the "turning the page" vibe that the Indians supposedly want to show their fans with the next managerial hire.

Of course, with all the losing Acta did in Washington, he may not be a real page-turner for Indians fans, either.

Acta is a losing manager. Why again do we want a loser? only in cleveland we want a loser. Dolan get out of town already and take shapiro with you. A winning manger will coach winning players. get with the program. Oh wait maybe acta is the next great Charlie Manual.

Manual and Francon were both 'losing managers' who were fired/quit before going on to win a combined 3 World Series in 5 seasons.
Of the 4 mentioned, Don would be my first choice followed by Acta.
There is NO WAY Lovullo gets this job. He's likely being interviewed for a bench/base coach job and that's it. I'm sorry, but I refuse to believe the Indians will make another FATAL mistake and hire a guy with no ML coaching experience. NEVER, EVER should you do that. Wedge, Hillman, and Hinch were the only 3 in baseball last year that had no prior ML coaching experience before becoming a manager. Hinch was a replacement, Wedge was fired.....and Hillman's team went backwards.
After watching Valentine on ESPN last night.....I'm hoping that he's not the choice. The guy sounded half retarded and seemed like he had no clue what he was talking about. I think the America baseball game has really passed him by. Good luck in the studio though.

Don Mattingly seems to be always with a winning organization. Maybe some of this magic will rub off on the Indians.
Wish the Yankees could find a place for him in their organization. Reggie wa given a job as special consultaant. He sure lit a fire under Alex! Man Alive! Rodriquez looks like the reincarnation of Jackson himself!

Mike Hargrove may not want to manage in Cleveland. I wouldn't. I managed a semi-pro team, also, and it was the best time I ever had. Guys play for the fun and joy of the game, instead of for the money and glory. Mike is in the right place, with his semi-pro team in western Kansas.

I really think Don Mattingly would be a very good choice and Bobby Valentine the second. Bobby brings a lot of experience with him and Mattingly brings his years with the Yankees and now the Dodgers. And now he has been with Joe Torre who is probably giving him tips on managing. Mike Hargrove is also a good choice as he did lead the Indians to how many post seasons?? Charlie Manual was not given enough time and now look what he is doing with the Phillies, can you say another World Series??? Yes Mr. Dolan open the pocket book and bring some real experience and knowledge. Acta no since he did nothing at Washington. Then let's get some real talent in Cleveland and not trade it away. How do you expect to win with only a few good men???

Team is too cheap, Valentine would be one of the highest on the payroll if they give him 4 million. Mark Shapiro is sooooooo overated! He said Hargrove is not a good match because they want a manager who is good with young talent and Hargrove would be better suited with an experienced team. Bull S*&t, Hargrove did fine with the young talent in the early 90's. Shapiro will set us back another 10 years......Such a spinster. Dolans are only family to send two franchises to a firey death. Indians and the Knicks....Morons need to stick with cable television!

Don't count on Cleveland to do anything for the good of the team or the fans , so ACTA will probably be the new manager. Do these men know they are interviewing for a job that is farm team management? Of course, that's where baseball is a true sport. All the owners do is what will be best for their pockets. They must not be too smart either because they haven't realized that a winner will produce much more revenue than a loser. Part of that is the fault of the fans who will go to see the team play no matter what. What we need are new owners and a new GM. The present owners knows very little and cares even less about the sport and the fans, They need to be sent packing. It's really fun watching the former Indians really playing baseball on the competitive teams. GO CAVS!!!!!

I still say we should of spoke to Tony Pena, the bench coach for Yankees now!
In case Shapiro cant figure it out-Tony Pena can speak spanish too.
I am sure the fans of the Cleveland Indians would rather have Tony Pena then Manny Acta, please take a poll someone? Tony Pena was 2003 AL Manager of the Year, what has Manny Acta done?
Now both of this guys Managed teams that did not have much in talent or players as Managers. KC-Wash Nats.
But the sign of a good manager is always getting the most out of what you do have, Tony Pena was able to do that in KC.
    Managerial/Coaching Career

I just saying; Tony pena would look pretty Good in a Indians uniform as a MANAGER!

The biggest splash would be Donnie baseball. But the question is, after being in the Yankees and Dodgers orgs, would he even want to come to Cleveland, both to work and live?
He's likely to be the guy to succeed Torre, so it might make sense for him to stay in LA.

Hire a Manager for his talent...not linguistic abilities! The players should learn english. I lived in Germany for 9 years in the IT business. Everyone in the office could speak english but they wouldn't. They told me that I should learn German so that I can understand my surroundings. So I did. Took me 6 mos and I was out and about on my own talking with the natives. And i'm glad I did it. After I became fluent in German, all my co-workers suddenly started speaking english with me! They told me that since I was now fluent in german with their help, I could return the favor and improve their english. It was a win all-around. The players should learn english as it will greatly improve their experiences and understanding of their surroundings.

If a man can keep his composure under circumstances like in Washington, then he must be respected. And stop with the whole "don't hire someone because of their ethnic background" b.s. This team needs to develop a stronger Latin identity on the staff. Acta is so well respected around the league and handled himself well with Nationals that I think he is the best choice.

It's been said here in LA that Mattingly would inherit Torre's managererial position when he retired. Torre said he's retiring at the end of his contract next year. Why would Donnie BB want the Indians job when he can have the Dodgers gig at the end of next year? Too live closer to his ex-wife?

    #10,
Hargrove has publicly said he wants to manage the Indians again.
And according to reports he has talked to Shapiro about it. But Shapiro has said he'd consider Hargrove in a different role.......he'd make a PERFECT bench coach.
I know I said I wanted Mattingly just earlier today....but I've been going back and forth on him. Love that he's a winner and he brings great skills as a player.......but I always worry about somone becoming a manager who's never managed at any pro level before (don hasn't in the majors or minors).
I do think Acta would be a good choice with Hargrove (or somone like him) on the bench with him.....but we'll see.

I'm surprised to see Manny Acta as a front-runner. From what I've heard, he is a great guy. He managed a team that lacked in talent - which his not his fault, but they also played very poorly - which was his fault.
Mattingly's best move, in my opinion, is to stick it out in LA and take over for Torre when he retires.
Bobby Valentine would be the best choice, but I guess he's going to be cost prohibitive.
So, the only one left is the AAA manager.
Are these the best of the 4 they interviewed???

    1. Mike Hargrove was/is a moron in Cleveland, in Baltimore, and in Seattle. Come on, people...turn that page.
    2. Manny Acta may be a Latino, but that shouldn't be the sole positive someone brings to the table. He is also a moron.
    3. Torey Lovello is not a moron. He could manage this team but will not be hired to pacify the fan base.
    4. Bobby Valentine should be hired if we want to actually win, but that money won't be spent.
Does that mean Mattingly wins? Who is number 5? I think #16 is right...hire Tony Pena! And #15, YOU are a moron. It is "Donnie Baseball", not "Donnie Longball". Please don't post anymore.
