Catcher John Buck(notes) hit .281 with 20 home runs last season for the Toronto Blue Jays. It was a career year for him. Now he's a free agent and close to signing with the Florida Marlins, the Fort Lauderdale Sun-Sentinel reports.
The paper reports that the deal is for three years and worth between $15 milion and $18 million.
Buck's offer is directly related to the Marlins knowing that they would be trading away second baseman Dan Uggla(notes), who turned down a four-year, $48 million proposal, the paper notes. Uggla was traded to the Atlanta Braves on Tuesday for infielder Omar Infante(notes) and left-handed reliever Mike Dunn(notes).
The Marlins had a big hole at catcher due to John Baker(notes) undergoing Tommy John surgery and Ronny Paulino(notes) being suspended 50 games after testing positive for a banned substance.
