According to league sources, for a little more than a week the Florida Marlins have been shopping catcher Matt Treanor. The team initiated talks with several clubs they felt were in the market for catchers.

Treanor, who underwent surgery on his left hip area after the season, is expected to be ready for Spring Training. Reports have already linked Treanor possibly heading to the Pirates or Tigers.

Entering his second season of arbitration, Treanor could make about $900,000 or $1 million, a price the Marlins don't seem to want to pay. John Baker has the edge to be the starting catcher. However, there is speculation from a league source that the Marlins are positioning themselves to pursue Ivan Rodriguez in free agency. Pudge, of course, was Florida's catcher on the 2003 World Series title team.

Probably a good fit for Detroit right now. He won't cost them much and Dusty Ryan is probably ready to be full time anyway. He and Treanor would probably split time pretty evenly whil Ryan is getting used to the big show.

Rodriguez ?, How old is he?. Treanor is not a very good hitter but he sure is a better than
average deffensive catchers, Too bad the cheap Marlins can't keep him and Misty in Florida.

The Tigers have been a big fan of Jack Wilson as their SS, so maybe some sort of 3 way deal between these 3 teams could be in order. I see Pudge resigning with the Tigers for a year will that kid Ryan gets eased into full time catching duties, with Treanor going to the Pirates so they can move Doumit to the OF.

Why would the Marlins go after Pudge and not keep this kid who is a lot younger. Not to mention that Pudge is done.

Is he injured? That's when the Pirates are usually interested in a player. They trade someone decent who goes on to a better place and the injured guy plays very few games with Pittsburgh.

    Daniel V:
Doumit is not being moved to the outfield. Pittsburgh is stocked with up and coming outfield talent. All of Doumit's value is behind the plate. If Pittsburgh got involved it would probably be to acquire a pitcher or shortstop from Detroit. Jack Wilson would also be involved, probably to the Tigers. Treanor is not coming to Pittsburgh. If he was acquired he would then be traded to a team like Detroit. Moving Doumit from catcher is terrible move, and Opie is not Dave Littlefield, so dumb moves are not going to happen.

Dumb moves are the Pirates trademark the past dozen years or so now. Next to McLouth, I wouldn't go as far as to say they are "stocked" with OF talent. It's a shame really, since the Pirates are the Orioles of the NL; a great sports town and a great new ballpark, a gold mine if someone smart purchased the club and actually put $$ into it.

    Daniel V,
Don't put too much emphasis on throwing money at a team. Look at the Mets. Heck, look at the Yankees. For all the money they've thrown at their teams, they can't even win the Series. What the Pirates lack is a poor Front Office.
To all of the Marlins haters, one thing everyone salivates at is to get a chance to pick up a Marlin once he reaches free agency. I think that is why that team is hated so much. The front office knows how to scout players. Unfortunately, the Marlins haters are probably backers of those same big market teams that would die to have a front office like the Marlins or the A's. Imagine what the Malins or A's front office would do w/ the money that the NY teams have. Boston does a much better job at acquiring talent. The Fish Front Office are good at what they do. Don't hate the team for making their dollars work efficiently.

Best bet is to promote Misty as catcher, dump her husband to Detroit and dump the useless management too! These are the jerks who could have gotten Manny but chose to miss the playoffs instead!

You're onto something. Imagine if the Marlins actually spent money to keep their players. They'd be a dynasty.

No, they'd be broke. The team has little revenue from lack of fan attendance and a crappy deal w/ the owners of Dolphin's stadium. Marlin's have talent b/c they have no money.
I actually like what the Royals have been doing the last couple of years. The have a lot of talent and are slowly improving that team.

What Marlins haters are afraid of is the fact that the Marlins will win another WS before their big-market teams do. The Marlins got about as far as any team could on power alone, and now that we're dumping excess baggage like Jacobs and Willingham in order to concentrate on the rest of our needs, I would not be surprised to see championship #3 come in 2009.

Get your facts straight. The Marlins missed out on Manny b/c Pittsburgh killed the deal. Might want to take some Immodium for that diarreah of the mouth your having.

I don't hate the Marlins. I respect the heck out of them Their FO has done an unbelievably great job. They are a scary team to face. They play hard every inning and they never ever quit. As a Phillies' fan, I liked the fact that the schedule each of the past two years had the Marlins at the Mets the final weekend. You knew coming in to that weekend series that the Mets were gonna face a stone circle death match in each and every game. And they did. With nothing to play for themselves (other than to knock the Mets out of the playoffs), the Marlins won both series 2-1. If the Mets win either series 2-1, they at least qualify for the play-in game.
Unfortunately, in 2009, the Phils have the Marlins that final weekend. I wouldn't go so far as Dan in #18 with regard to WS #3, but I think the Marlins have a legitimate shot at the NL East in 2009.
Oh and Mr. C. #6, the logic on Pudge to the Marlins is that the young kid catching (John Baker) and the young pitching staff could really benefit from Pudge's experience. If Pudge retired, I'm thinking they'd grab him as a coach or consultant, but he wants to play, so that's their end game. The Phillies look to Jamie Moyer for the same type of mentoring.
