According to league sources, for a little more than a week the Florida Marlins have been shopping catcher Matt Treanor. The team initiated talks with several clubs they felt were in the market for catchers.
Treanor, who underwent surgery on his left hip area after the season, is expected to be ready for Spring Training. Reports have already linked Treanor possibly heading to the Pirates or Tigers.
Entering his second season of arbitration, Treanor could make about $900,000 or $1 million, a price the Marlins don't seem to want to pay. John Baker has the edge to be the starting catcher. However, there is speculation from a league source that the Marlins are positioning themselves to pursue Ivan Rodriguez in free agency. Pudge, of course, was Florida's catcher on the 2003 World Series title team.

Doumit is not being moved to the outfield. Pittsburgh is stocked with up and coming outfield talent. All of Doumit's value is behind the plate. If Pittsburgh got involved it would probably be to acquire a pitcher or shortstop from Detroit. Jack Wilson would also be involved, probably to the Tigers. Treanor is not coming to Pittsburgh. If he was acquired he would then be traded to a team like Detroit. Moving Doumit from catcher is terrible move, and Opie is not Dave Littlefield, so dumb moves are not going to happen.

Don't put too much emphasis on throwing money at a team. Look at the Mets. Heck, look at the Yankees. For all the money they've thrown at their teams, they can't even win the Series. What the Pirates lack is a poor Front Office.
To all of the Marlins haters, one thing everyone salivates at is to get a chance to pick up a Marlin once he reaches free agency. I think that is why that team is hated so much. The front office knows how to scout players. Unfortunately, the Marlins haters are probably backers of those same big market teams that would die to have a front office like the Marlins or the A's. Imagine what the Malins or A's front office would do w/ the money that the NY teams have. Boston does a much better job at acquiring talent. The Fish Front Office are good at what they do. Don't hate the team for making their dollars work efficiently.

You're onto something. Imagine if the Marlins actually spent money to keep their players. They'd be a dynasty.

I actually like what the Royals have been doing the last couple of years. The have a lot of talent and are slowly improving that team.

Get your facts straight. The Marlins missed out on Manny b/c Pittsburgh killed the deal. Might want to take some Immodium for that diarreah of the mouth your having.

Unfortunately, in 2009, the Phils have the Marlins that final weekend. I wouldn't go so far as Dan in #18 with regard to WS #3, but I think the Marlins have a legitimate shot at the NL East in 2009.
Oh and Mr. C. #6, the logic on Pudge to the Marlins is that the young kid catching (John Baker) and the young pitching staff could really benefit from Pudge's experience. If Pudge retired, I'm thinking they'd grab him as a coach or consultant, but he wants to play, so that's their end game. The Phillies look to Jamie Moyer for the same type of mentoring.
