The Los Angeles Dodgers got another day closer to the playoffs, on a pretty miserable day for them. They lost, but so did the Arizona Diamondbacks, and so the Dodgers' magic number could be down to zero as soon as Tuesday.

So let's fast forward to the playoffs, using Friday's 7-1 loss to the San Francisco Giants as a springboard. The Dodgers' starters include perhaps the greatest pitcher of his generation, and yet Greg Maddux could be the odd man out of the rotation come playoff time.

It is a curious, even ludicrous, proposition, at least at first glance. Maddux accepted a trade to the Dodgers for one more shot at October. He has the cool, the smarts, the experience. What he does not have, at least not right now, are the cold, hard numbers to secure a spot in the postseason rotation.

Maddux was rocked by the Giants on Friday, giving up seven runs in five innings, and that in itself means nothing. In his previous start, after all, he threw seven shutout innings at Coors Field.

But Maddux has seven victories this season, all against teams in the National League West. The playoffs do not admit teams under .500, and he has not beaten a team that currently has a winning record since April. His record against those teams: 1-7 in 13 starts, with a 4.76 earned-run average. The team he beat? The Dodgers. His overall ERA is 4.31, the highest among the Dodgers' starters.

Thomas G what's wrong with your Dodgers?! Can't even beat the Giants? Don't worry, at least you can raise that all important "NL WEST CHAMPIONS" flag next year.

Live I still think the Giants have a chance in that division whether it's next year or more likely 2010. They at least have direction.

Teams like KC, Pittsburgh, Seattle have no direction whatsoever. Pittsburgh just trades off their best players, and then KC is just a ways off. But like I said it helps when you play in a weak division.

The Dodger just don't have the horses to compete in the playoffs. Schmidt is done. Maddox is fading. Ramirez and Ethier are all they've got going for them. The NL West is pathetic. OTH, Sandoval of the Giants is an impressive hitter. Put him at 3B and backup C. Add Lewis and Schierholtz to the mix and SF is starting to look good for next year WITHOUT signing a free agent! If Sanchez can match Cain to compliment Lincecum, then they'll have a pitching rotation that will concern their opponents. Maybe even Zito will get his head together and contribute. When Baumgartner comes up, their pitching staff will dominate this division in 2010. The Dodgers built for this year and missed. AZ will compete next year, but they're inconsistant. Colorado is ok, but again inconsistent. SD is just an embarassment. Cubs over Red Sox in the series! (If TB doesn't surprise them).

SD is an embarrasment and to think they almost made the playoffs last year with 89 wins.

One lose and its all down the tubes huh. Execpt for the fact that we still hold a 3 1/2 game lead and AZ has a tougher schedule then we do. So the Giants got one over on us. Teams always play better when they are eliminated from contention, ie Nats, Royals, Yankees. And don't forget, the Giants/Dodgers is a rivalry matchup. The G'nats can suck the whole season still but come out swinging when it comes to the Dodgers. No horses... What about Billingsley, Lowe, Kuroda, and Kershaw. Lets not forget a pretty good bullpen with Broxton, Bimel, Kuo, Proctor, and Chan Ho. Even without Saito and Penny they have a tough pitching staff. Just Manny and Either?? Kemp, Blake, Loney and Martin can still know how to get on base. Even though Martin has slowed down he is still awesome behind the plate where it counts. Dewitt has, once again steeped it up when we need him to. Even guys like Berroa, Pierre, and Hu are contributing. Weak division or not, as long as your in 1st when the dust settles, thats all that counts. Playoffs are a brand new season.

this is a tough decision, he is a hall of fame guy but clearly hasnt had it since coming to the dodgers.i would put him on the roster, maybe in the pen and see how it goes.with all players your career sometimes ends quicker than anticipated and not on your own terms.

Live I don't consider that a playoff. SD would officially been in had they taken care of Milwaukee that last game of the season. Colorado had to win and SD had to lose just to force a 1 game playoff. SD had basically a game up on Colorado and couldn't take care of them. Now Colorado was just on fire but SD wins that final game and they don't even have to play a 1 game playoff.

thomas g on the cubs bandwagon, would like them to win it all for their fans,if the cubs fail would have to root for the dodgers as thet are in our division and their fans have waited 20 years for a playoff series win. giants!!!!!!!!!! and niners!!!!!!!!!!!! i think my near death experience snowboarding has changed my perspective.

Thomas I don't think you get it...I have nothing to be mad at. How does anger come through the keyboard onto the screen? What do I have to be bitter about? Cubs are the best team in the league and will clinch today. History means nothing for the present and future. Dodger fans should be the ones concerned, Torre is not going to get out of the first round there either. Especially if you have to play the Phillies, but regardless LA will be the road team in the first round.
