“JobaNew York Yankees starter Joba Chamberlain(notes) had a horrendous performance against one of the worst teams in the league last night. He threw 91 pitches in 3.2 innings of work against the Kansas City Royals in a 4-3 loss.

Chamberlain certainly won't be a starter in the American League Division Series, where the Yanks will use C.C. Sabathia(notes), Andy Pettitte(notes), and A.J. Burnett(notes). While Chamberlain has obviously worked out of the bullpen before, it isn't clear if there is room in the reliever ranks for him, either, according to the New York Daily News. "If they want me to fold towels, I'll fold towels," Chamberlain told the paper. "I don't really care. Whatever they see fit, I want to help this team win in any role that I'm in."

If manager Joe Girardi doesn't see some evidence of the old fist-pumping Chamberlain soon enough, he could be relegated to towel folding.

The Kansas City Royals have been hot, lately. Chamby just ran into a hot team at the wrong time. He's a gamer and belongs on the post-season roster, even if its just for moral support. He has contributed towards the championship throughout the season and deserves a spot.

Because Chamberlain in the 7th inning, Hughes in the 8th, and Mo in the 9th, could potentially turn every game into a 6 inning game. I'd rather see Chamberlain then Coke.

I agree Str A's that he deserves a spot. He stepped up for us when we needed it against Boston last week to set the tone of that series. He seems to loaf when there is no pressure

    Bullpen sounds good.
Maybe if the retards didn't make him throw 3 innings a start he wouldn't have blown so badly lately.

    Mr. Mike,
If Pettitte or A.J. falters, it would be nice to have Chamberlain available for long relief. He's good for 3 innings. The Chamberlain starting experiment wasn't his fault. Management should have kept him in the bullpen, where he belongs. He just can't stay fired up for more that a couple of innings.

Royals Hot? Last 10 they won 4 . their really hot every 5 days when Grenky is pitching. Joba should have ate them up. But couldn t . I would have him on the post season roster , but not as a 4th starter. Maybe a long man in mo up situations. If the Yanks are far ahead and you want to rest a real starter. Or if they are far behind and you don t want to waste a good releiver.

They messed it up at the beginning of the year moving him to the starter role. He is a bullpen reliever.

joba is gonna be on the roster and be used in the 7th. but you CANT keep him off. if damaso marte is on the roster and joa is OFF. girardi should be fired. plus if a starter gets hurt, joba or believe it or not, chad gaudin is next in.

As much as I love the guy Joba right now should be left off the ALDS roster. The 7th inning belongs to Bruney who has turned it on the last month or so with the 8th and 9th belonging to Hughes and Mo. If I was Girardi I'd pitch Joba from the pen 2 days in a row this weekend to see if he can even still come out of the pen and be effective. If he can't I think it would be best to leave him off the ALDS roster because as much as it might hurt his ego Girardi has 24 other guys and some very demanding bosses to worry about.

he got on a roll and they cut his pitches/innings.
how is he supposed to find a groove? not his fault.
i wouldn't get too attached to him anyway (mauer).
as far as "deserves a spot" ...bs. "deserves" don't beat the angels.
no room in the bullpen for automatic 0-2 counts.

Joba in the Pen in the late innings would work better I think..I could see Gaudin as a 4th starter if the Yanks get past the ALDS...
This JOBA rules thing has ruined this kid so far..
as for 2010 - Joba in the pen and sign another quality starter

It would seem that Joba is a better fit for the bullpen than he is as a starter. I would think the Yanks would be better off to use him as a setup man in the future and the eventual replacement for Mo Rivera. Not that anyone cares what a Red Sox fan thinks about this. lol

Morning Real - Next year the rules will be lifted. He should be able to go more than 200 innings. I think they stick with him being a starter. He just turned 24 so Yankees dont need to panick just yet with him

It's too late to convert him to bullpen. Should have pulled him earlier last night and give him two appearances (1 batter only on Friday, then full inning on Sunday). Anything less, will not be enough to get him (mentally) ready. Off the roster for ALDS, unfortunately... I don't think he can get his command back in time - let alone velocity - for bullpen duty.
